Robert Eugene Smith recorded 12 letters and was on the Dean’s List all four years at Lincoln. As a member of the football, men’s basketball and baseball teams from 1948-1953, Smith was All-Conference in each sport and earned the Legend Award. He was the first Lincoln men’s basketball player to have back-to-back 50-point games. Smith was the head men’s basketball coach, track & field coach and assistant football coach from 1956-1965. He became the Athletic Director at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore from 1965-1968 and after leaving UMES he worked at Rutgers University as the Sports Information Director from 1969-1994. Smith was the first African-American to be named the College Sports Information Directors of America President in 1987-88. After graduating from Lincoln University in 1953, Smith earned a master of arts in American Literature from the University of Pennsylvania in 1962. He also served on the board of directors for the Neighborhood House in New Brunswick, N.J., from 1969-1972.
