As a student-athlete Dr. Frank "Tick" Coleman, was the quarterback of the football team and a member of the wrestling team. In addition to his own participation in athletics, he was the manager of the basketball team and sat on the intramural council, furthering his involvement in athletics. Upon graduating in 1935, Dr. Coleman served as the Director of Alumni Relations from 1981-1998, recruiting students to attend the University. He received an honorary doctorate degree from Lincoln University in 1984, and played a major role in the return of football in 2008. Dr. Coleman was an alumni representative on the Board of Trustees for 10 years. Dr. Coleman worked for the School District of Philadelphia as a youth counselor for 32 years, retiring in 1981. He earned a master’s degree in 1959 from the Penn School of Social Work. Dr. Coleman mentored students and funded numerous scholarships for African-American youth to attend college. His involvement in the community included, but was not limited to, the Philadelphia Christian Street YMCA, Wharton Settlement, Wissahickon Boys Club, Department of Public Assistance, Department of Recreation, Peace Corps, and Salvation Army. Dr. Coleman passed away on December 25, 2008.
