LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – The Lincoln University (PA) football team continues CIAA play Saturday, October 17, when the Lions travel to Charlotte, North Carolina, to face Johnson C. Smith University. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Irwin Belk Complex as the Golden Bulls celebrate Homecoming.
Lincoln enters the matchup at 1-5 overall and 1-3 in conference play, looking to return to the win column against a Johnson C. Smith team that stands at 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the CIAA.
Last Time Out
The Lions showed resilience in a 35-21 loss at Elizabeth City State on October 10, outscoring the Vikings 14-0 in the fourth quarter.
Kyrie Tyson (Elkton, MD/Elkton HS) led Lincoln's receiving corps with 10 catches for 147 yards and two touchdowns. Both scores came in the final period, including a 47-yard touchdown reception. Quarterback Mikal Davis completed 25-of-39 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns without an interception.
Dexter Baptisin added a four-yard rushing touchdown, while
Sahaaj Bennett (Netcong, NJ/Malcolm X Shabazz HS) paced the defense with 10 tackles. Lincoln finished with 309 yards of total offense and 22 first downs while controlling possession for 35:02.
Lions Earn Conference Recognition
Tyson and Bennett received CIAA weekly honors following their performances against Elizabeth City State. Tyson was selected as Receiver of the Week, while Bennett earned Defensive Back of the Week recognition after recording 10 tackles, a tackle for loss and a fumble recovery. The pair will look to carry that production into Saturday's conference matchup.
Scouting Johnson C. Smith
The Golden Bulls have won five consecutive games and enter Saturday following a 49-6 victory over Shaw. Johnson C. Smith has outscored its last two opponents 100-6, including a 51-0 win at Bluefield State.
Quarterback Damien Mazil accounted for five touchdowns against Shaw, throwing four touchdown passes and adding a rushing score. His touchdown targets included Fabian Duncan, Kamarro Edmonds, Reginald Daniel and Brian Lane, highlighting the Golden Bulls' ability to generate explosive plays through multiple receivers.
Defensively, Vincent Hill led Johnson C. Smith with 11 tackles as the Golden Bulls limited Shaw to one touchdown.
For Lincoln, sustaining drives, finishing scoring opportunities and limiting explosive plays will be central to challenging the Golden Bulls. A productive start and consistent execution across all three phases could help the Lions build on the momentum of last week's fourth-quarter effort.
