Lions Struggle Offensively in Season Finale Versus Virginia State

Box Score PETERSBURG, VA – Derrick Washington (Washington, DC/Coolidge SHS) carried the Lions with 11 points in a 73-57 loss against Virginia State University on Saturday, February 22nd. Lincoln's bench outscored their opponent 29-16, but Virginia State held the Lions to 26% shooting from the field.

The Lions sent the Trojans to the free-throw line 14 times in the opening half and were outrebounded 26-14. Senior guard Justin Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) led Lincoln with seven points and senior guard Derrick Washington (Washington, DC/Coolidge SHS) added five points. Out of the Lions eight made shots from the field, four were from behind the arc. Lincoln shot 26% in the first half while Virginia State was 45% and held a 35-25 lead at the half.

In the second half, Lincoln found success at the free-throw line with 26 trips. Senior guard George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) made 7-of-8 attempts while both Derrick Washington (Washington, DC/Coolidge SHS) and junior guard Kyle Aiken (Randolph, NJ/Randolph HS) each went a perfect 4-for-4. The Lions converted on 19 of those attempts but failed to hit shots from three-point range. Sophomore guard James Stewart (Washington, DC/Charles Herbert Flowers HS) hit the Lions only made triple in the second half as the rest of went 0-for-7. Defensively, Virginia State held Lincoln to 27% shooting from the field down the stretch and went on to win 73-57.

Derrick Washington (Washington, DC/Coolidge SHS) led Lincoln with 11 points and Kyle Aiken (Randolph, NJ/Randolph HS) added seven points for the Lions bench. George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) had nine points and Justin Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) scored seven points. The Lions conclude their season with an 18-8 overall record and 10-6 in CIAA play.

The Lions look to make a run at the 2013-14 CIAA Basketball Championships in Charlotte, NC next week.
