Box Score Lincoln University, PA - Needing only 13 points to reach the historical mark heading into today's game, senior guard Cynthia Johnson (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) reached the 1,000 career-point mark with her 14-point performance in a loss to Virginia State University on Saturday, February 1st in Manuel Rivero Hall.

Cynthia Johnson (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) scored nine points in the first half, needing just four to get to 1,000 going into the second half. Johnson reached 998 career points with a basket at the 17:05 mark.

With 5:22 left she drew a defensive foul and was sent to the free-throw line for two shots. She split a pair of attempts to bring her total up to 999.

Virginia State sent her to the line again with 1:42 left. Cynthia Johnson (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) squared up for the first shot, knocked it down and finally notched her 1,000th career point. The game was then stopped so that her achievement could be honored in front of the Lincoln crowd. Immediately after, she sank her second free throw ending the game with a total of 1,001 points. The milestone was reached in 104 games during her four seasons.

Johnson is only the sixth player in Lincoln women's basketball history to reach the illustrious milestone, but she is the first to have all of her points scored with Lincoln as a NCAA Division II institution. She joins Tehma Smith, Sharay DuBose, LaShanda Maxwell, DeJuana Mosley and Asha Atkinson.

The Lady Lions experienced a rough first half. They shot just 33 percent from the field, committed 15 turnovers, and got outrebounded by 10.

Lincoln was able to hold Virginia State to 34 percent shooting and force them into 11 turnovers in the half. However, VSU got to the free-throw line 10 times and knocked them all down, which helped them build a 36-23 lead by intermission.

To open the second half, the Lady Lions were able to slightly chip away at the deficit and cut it to eight with 16:39 to go. Virginia State quickly retaliated by inflating their lead back up to 12 points and then 14 with a little more than three minutes after that.

Thanks to three straight layups by sophomores forward Lisa Saunders (Hampton, VA/Hampton HS), guard Amani Clark (Middletown, DE/Appoquinimink HS) and center Mieana Gaines (Lincoln Park, MI/Southfield University Academy); the Lady Lions pulled the lead back down to eight with about eight and a half minutes left to play.

That was the last time Lincoln trailed by just single digits unfortunately as Virginia State seized control and went on a 16-10 run the rest of the way to create a final score of 67-53. The Trojans led by as many as 15 in both halves.

Amani Clark (Middletown, DE/Appoquinimink HS) scored nine points, grabbed four rebounds and dished out three assists.

Junior forward Zephrah Pam (Syracuse, NY/Monroe CC) added eight points and seven rebounds.

Cynthia Johnson (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute)'s full stat line consisted at 14 points, four assists, four rebounds, two blocks and a steal. She also shot 4-8 from the field and 6-8 from the line.
