Box Score 2 LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – It was a banner day for the Lincoln University baseball team on Saturday afternoon as the Lions sweep a CIAA doubleheader over Shaw, 16-11 and 9-3, in their home opener at Lincoln University Baseball Field.
“It feels good to have a win in our home opener,” Lincoln head coach Anthony Pla said. “It was great to see a good fan base for our first home games of the season.”
In the opener, Lincoln played from behind most of the afternoon, but used a 10-run sixth to knock off Shaw, 16-11.
The Lions trailed, 11-6, heading into the bottom of the sixth, but rallied with 10 runs on seven hits and took advantage of an error to grab the lead for the first time in the afternoon.
With one out in the frame,
Richard Holguin (Bronx, N.Y./Fannie Lou Hamer HS), who went 1-for-3, walked and came in to score when
Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) singled through the right side. Smith took third on a passed ball and scored when
Kyle Finneman (South Jordan, Utah/Bingham), who went 3-for-5, doubled to left center.
Edwin Rivera (Bronx, N.Y./Gompers HS), who paced the offense by going 4-for-4 and had seven hits in the doubleheader, followed with a double to right center to plate Finneman.
After a pitching change,
Maurice Brown (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg HS) walked and advanced a base when
Dan Spikes (Fort Washington, Md./Riverdale Baptist HS) singled to right, which scored
Ivan Mitchell (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy), who pinch ran for Rivera.
Devin Legins (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy) was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Alejandro Jones (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS), who went 2-for-4, reached on an infield hit as Brown scored.
Martin Evans (Willingboro, N.J./Church Farm HS), who began the inning, drew a walk as Spikes scored. Holguin followed with a base hit through the right side as Legins and Jones scored. A balk brought Evans in to score and Finneman singled through the left side to score Holguin to give the Lions 10 runs in the inning and a 16-11 advantage.
Brandon Bolden (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro HS) started for Lincoln as he gave up four runs (all unearned) on three hits.
Phillip Tomsic (Bangor, Mich./Bangor HS) (1-1) picked up the win in four innings of work in relief.
Jerrell Harvey took the loss as he gave up four runs on six hits in 0.2 innings.
After a scoreless first three innings in the second game, Shaw and Lincoln traded runs in the fourth and the Bears took a 2-1 advantage into the bottom of the fifth, but the Lions got four runs on three hits to grab the lead.
In the fifth, Jones, who went 1-for-3, reached on an error to begin the frame and advanced to second on a base hit by Evans. With one down, Bolden walked to load the bases. Finneman, who went 2-for-3, followed with a base hit to score Jones and Rivera singled to plate Evans and Bolden. Finneman came in when
Ivan Mitchell (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy) reached on a fielder's choice to give Lincoln a 5-2 advantage.
Lincoln put the game away with four more runs in the sixth as Shaw was only able to grab a run in the seventh as the Lions complete the doubleheader sweep and will look to complete the series sweep on Sunday.
Smith (1-4) scattered 11 hits in seven innings to earn the win. He fanned a season-best nine and walked four.
Lance Weathersly took the loss as he gave up nine runs on nine hits with four walks.
Lincoln closes out the three-game CIAA series 1 p.m., Sunday, March 24 at the Lincoln University Baseball Field against Shaw University.
