Lincoln drops hard fought overtime game at Goldey-Beacom

Box Score WILMINGTON, Del. – The Lincoln University men's basketball team got off to a slow start on Wednesday night and forced overtime before falling to Goldey-Beacom College, 86-83, at the Joseph West College Center.
 
George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) led three Lincoln players with 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting, including an amazing 5-of-6 from behind the 3-point line. Kenny Sharpe (Chester, Pa./Elite Academy) had 21 points, including eight from the free-throw line, and had seven rebounds. Derrick Washington (Washington, DC/Coolidge SHS) chipped in with 16 points as the Lions shot 45 percent (29-of-65).
 
Lincoln (12-9) fell behind, 24-9, after a layup  by Will Williams with 9:42 remaining in the first half. The Lions rallied behind a 16-7 run to close the gap to 29-25 after a George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) 3-pointer with 5:41 left.
 
The final five minutes of the first half belonged to Lincoln. After digging themselves a double-digit hole early on, the Lions cut the deficit to 34-32 after free throws by Wayne Newsome (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway HS), Justin Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) and Kenny Sharpe (Chester, Pa./Elite Academy) to give Lincoln a 35-34 advantage heading into the half.
 
Neither team had a lead bigger than three points in the second half and with the game tied at 56, Lincoln got buckets by George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) and Wayne Newsome (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway HS) to give the Lions a 60-56 advantage with 7:19 remaining. However, the Lightning battled back and used an 8-2 run, capped by a Marcus Porter layup, with 5:07 left to give Goldey-Beacom a 64-62 lead.
 
With the game tied at 70 with 15 seconds remaining, Porter had a chance to give the Lightning the win with a jumper, but his shot rimmed out, sending the game to overtime.
 
Goldey-Beacom (7-15) used a 9-3 run to begin the extra period, capped by a three-point play by Porter with 1:27 remaining. The Lions tried to recover down the stretch as George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) scored on a layup with 26.1 seconds left, to cut the deficit to 81-79.
 
A.J. Picard sank a pair at the free-throw line to give the Lightning an 83-79 lead, but a layup by Washington with 18 seconds remaining trimmed the deficit back to two points, 83-81. But Akili Charles sank a pair at the charity stripe with 11 seconds left and the Lions couldn't recover.
 
Porter paced all scorers with a double-double performance, 30 points and 14 rebounds. Picard scored 18 points, while Williams had 16. Kyle Steinbergin finished with 12 points as the Lightning were 29-of-73 shooting for 40 percent.
