Lincoln splits with Elizabeth City State in CIAA doubleheader

Kevin Cicali (Absecon, N.J./Holy Spirit HS) and Martin Evans (Willingboro, N.J./Church Farm HS) homered in the opening game of a CIAA series on Saturday against Elizabeth City State, but the bats silent in the second game as the Lions split with the Vikings, taking the first game, 12-6, but falling in the second, 14-5, at Oxford Area High School.
 
In the first game, Lincoln (5-19 overall, 3-10 CIAA) raced out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first inning and added to the margin with four runs in the second.
 
With one down, Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS), who went 2-for-3, doubled to right center and Evans reached on an error and advanced to second on the play. Demetrius Morris, who was 3-for-4, singled up the middle to plate Smith and Evans. Cicali, who went 2-for-4, followed with his first career collegiate home run to extend the Lincoln lead to 6-0.
 
Elizabeth City State (4-20, 2-11) closed the gap to 6-1 with a run in the top of the third, but the Lions quickly answered in the bottom of the frame.
 
With two outs, Matthew Anderson (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech), who went 2-for-3, singled to center and advanced to third when Smith reached on an infield hit and took second on an error. Both runners came in to score when Evans, who went 1-for-3, smacked the first pitch he saw from Vikings starter Cameron Cecil to give Lincoln a commanding 9-1 advantage.
 
Elizabeth City State used a five-run fourth to cut the deficit to 9-6, but that was as close as the Vikings would get as the Lions plated three runs in the sixth for the 12-6 win.
 
Richard Holguin (Bronx, N.Y./Fannie Lou Hamer HS) (2-4) earned the win in pitching 3.2 innings. He gave up six runs on four hits with seven walks and a pair of strikeouts. Carl Randall (Fort Washington, Md./Gwynn Park HS) picked up the save in working the final 3.1 innings in relief.
 
Cecil was charged with 12 runs (11 earned) on 13 hits with two walks and a strikeout in six innings of work.
 
Also collecting hits for Lincoln in the first game was Maurice Brown (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg HS) (1-for-3), Alexander Donald (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) (1-for-4) and Brandon Dooley (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) (1-for-4).
 
In the nightcap, the bats went silent as Lincoln had seven hits in the loss to Elizabeth City State.
 
Evans led the way offensively by going 2-for-3, while Demetrius Morris, Dooley, Brown, Donald and Brandon Bolden (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro HS) each had one hit.
 
Kyle Brooks (Baltimore, Md./Seton Hill HS) (0-3) took the loss. He surrendered nine runs (seven earned) on 12 hits with five walks and three strikeouts in five innings. Devin Legins (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy) and Dooley pitched in relief.
 
Tyler Pryor (2-3) pitched six strong innings to get the win. He gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits with five walks and fanned four. Robert Krehel worked an inning in relief.
 
The Lions wrap up the three-game CIAA series 1 p.m., on Sunday, April 8 against Elizabeth City State at Oxford Area High School.
