Bats come alive as Lions split with Bears

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 RALEIGH, N.C. – The Lincoln University bats came alive in the second game of a CIAA doubleheader on Tuesday as the Lions pounded out 15 hits in earning a split by falling in Game 1, 5-2, but rebounding with a 16-4 victory in Game 2 at Lion's Park.

In the first, Demetrius Morris and Kevin Cicali (Absecon, N.J./Holy Spirit HS) each had two hits in the 5-2 loss to the Bears.

Lincoln (4-17 overall, 2-8 CIAA) tried to erase a 4-0 deficit by scoring a run in the fourth.

Kyle Brooks (Baltimore, Md./Seton Hill HS) started things off and was hit by a pitch and advanced all the way to third when Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) singled. Brandon Dooley (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) followed with a ground out to the second baseman to plate Brooks.

The Lions chipped away at the margin with a run in the fifth on two hits.

Morris walked and came in to score when Cicali doubled to left to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Matthew Anderson (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) (2-4) took the loss in pitching six innings. He gave up five runs (three earned) on six hit with a pair of walks and fanned eight.

James Crew gave up two runs on seven hits with three walks and a strikeout in a complete-game win.

Also collecting hits for Lincoln were David Christian (Inglewood, Calif./Alta Loma HS) and Maurice Brown (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg HS).

The nightcap belonged to the Lions.

After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, Lincoln tied the game at 1 with a run in the second and took a 3-1 lead with a pair of runs in the third.

Despite Shaw (8-17, 4-8) cutting the margin to 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the frame, Lincoln exploded for nine runs in the fourth to put the game out of reach.

Martin Evans (Willingboro, N.J./Church Farm HS) singled to begin the inning and stole second. Morris stroked a base hit through the right side to move Evans to third. After a walk to Cicali loaded the bases, Richard Holguin (Bronx, N.Y./Fannie Lou Hamer HS), who went 2-for-2, drew a base on balls to score Evans. Brown, who went 3-for-4, followed with a bases-clearing double to center as Morris, Cicali and Holguin each scored. Brooks followed with a walk and Brandon Dooley (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy), who went 2-for-5,  reached on an error as Brown scored. Brooks scored on a wild pitch and Dooley crossed the plate when Dan Spikes (Fort Washington, Md./Riverdale Baptist HS) grounded out. Brandon Bolden (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro HS) singled through the left side and the onslaught continued as Evans reached on an error. Bolden scored on a passed ball and Ivan Mitchell (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy), pinch running for Evans, came in to score on a sacrifice bunt by Morris to give the Lions a commanding 12-2 lead.

Lincoln, which also got hits from Devin Legins (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy) and Christian Valdez (Hyattsville, Md./Bladensburg HS), tacked on four runs in the seventh for good measure to give the Lions a 16-4 victory.

Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) (1-1) had a nice day on the mound for Lincoln, going seven innings to get the win. He surrendered four runs (three earned) on seven hits with four walks and a strikeout.

The Lions close out the six-game CIAA road trip with a 1 p.m., single, nine-inning game against Shaw on Wednesday, April 4 at Lion's Park.
