Lions roar to overtime thriller over Broncos

Box Score
LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa.Denzel Mooney (Baltimore, Md./Western School of Technology) scored 19 of his game-high 27 points from the foul line, none bigger than the final two free throws with three seconds remaining, as the Lincoln University men's basketball team knock off Fayetteville State, 78-75, in overtime on Thursday night in a CIAA game at Manuel Rivero Hall.

“We play a lot of our games close,” Lincoln head coach John Hill said. “We have been making plays to win. Some nights are good and some not so good. Even though as a program we are not where we want to be, we are getting there. They see that if we play our game plan on any night, we will win the game.”

Mooney, who went 19-of-20 from the charity stripe, finished with 27 points, three rebounds and four assists. Justin Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) added 15 points, while Derrick Washington (Washington, DC/Coolidge SHS) chipped in with 14 points. Kenny Sharpe (Chester, Pa./Elite Academy), who had a crucial putback at the end of regulation, poured in 10 points as the Lions (7-8 overall, 2-2 CIAA) shot 37 percent (23-of-63) from the field.

In the first half, there were eight ties as the Broncos took a 38-37 edge into the break.

The Broncos (4-7, 2-2) took a 60-54 advantage with 3:44 left in regulation after a jumper by Seth Hawkins, but the Lions battled back, tying the contest at 60 on a pair of free throws by Mooney with 2:07 remaining.

A 3-pointer by Jackson with 1:30 left gave Lincoln a 63-62 advantage and Sharpe's putback with 18 seconds remaining appeared to be the game-winner until Tim Plummer sank a 3-pointer from the right corner to tie the game with 2 seconds left.

In overtime, Lincoln scored 11 of its 13 points at the foul line to get the win.

The Lions open its four-game road trip 7:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 16 in a CIAA contest against Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, N.C.
