OXFORD, Pa. (April 10, 2011) — Lincoln University baseball earned its third sweep of the season and its second versus Saint Paul's College on Sunday afternoon.
The Lions downed the Tigers, 6-4 and 9-4, at Oxford Area High School, picking up two key Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association wins.
Phillip Tomsic (Bangor, Mich./Bangor HS) (2-5) and Kyle Brooks (Baltimore, Md./Seton Hill HS) (3-4) each pitched complete games in huge performances on the mound. Tomsic, a sophomore pitching in front of his Michigan-based family, pitched seven innings and struck out six. Brooks, also with family in attendance, allowed just two earned runs and struck out seven to complete the perfect 4-0 season against Saint Paul's.
For a team trying to get into the conference playoffs in its first season in the league, the bats were quiet. Entering the bottom of the fourth, the Lions (7-17, 7-15 CIAA) trailed 2-1, but Percy Bullock (Pittsburgh, PA/Susquehanna) delivered a two-RBI triple sliced down the right-field line to spearhead a four-run inning.
“I just wanted a sac fly,” the senior said. “The previous inning, we needed one and didn't get it, so I wanted to make sure I got a good pitch and put it in play. Once I saw it was dropping, I got going.”
In the second game, Saint Paul's (0-24, 0-23 CIAA) continued to hang around. Up 5-3 in the bottom of the fourth, the Lions erupted for another four-run frame. With one run already in on a ball hit by Dan Spikes (Fort Washington, Md./Riverdale Baptist HS), Melvin Robinson (Bear, DE/William Penn) delivered a two-RBI double to break the game open.
Robinson was 3-for-4 in game two with three RBIs and three runs scored. He was also 1-for-2 in game one and upped his average to a team-high .366. Tomsic was also 2-for-4 in game two with an RBI single.
"I'd been putting a lot of work after practice," Robinson said. "I'm swinging well at the perfect time. It's great to be playing for the postseason right now."
With the wins, Lincoln passes Elizabeth City State with seven conference wins as the Vikings have just six. The two still have a doubleheader to be made up as Saturday's meeting was postponed. The Lions sit two wins back of Shaw, a team they split with earlier in the year.
Up Next
The Lions have three home CIAA doubleheaders to conclude the regular season. The stretch begins with a doubleheader on Tuesday against Saint Augustine's College, making up a twinbill that was postponed earlier this season. First pitch is 1 p.m. at Oxford Area High School.
