LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. (February 19, 2011) — Senior DeJuana Mosley (Chester, PA/Chester) shined Saturday before her friends and family, but her team-high 15-point, eight-rebound performance was not enough on Senior Night.
The Lady Lions fell to Virginia Union, 49-40, in a defensive-minded struggle at Manuel Rivero Hall on Saturday.
Mosley was one of the program's two seniors honored between the men's and women's games during the doubleheader. Sasha Evans (Hampton, VA/Phoebus), the team's starting point guard, tallied an assist and a rebound while coping with foul trouble.
Danielle Smallwood (Philadelphia, PA/West Catholic) had 11 points but it was on 4-of-17 shooting. Several of her big treys fueled LU's attempt at a second-half comeback. Mfon Ekanem (Springdale, Md./C.H Flowers HS) ties her season high with five blocks.
The Lady Lions shot only 24 percent from the field and 42 percent from the free throw line. Lincoln also only converted 10 of 24 from the free throw line as the Lady Panthers made 20 for 32.
LU dominated the early going, leading 10-6 midway through the period, but VUU took the lead, 13-12, with 3:18 remaining in the half and 20-14 at the break.
Over the final period, LU trailed by as much as 14, but the Lady Lions did chip away, and with 30 seconds left, Brittney Waters (Capitol Heights, Md./Charles H. Flowers) nailed a trey in the corner to bring LU within 46-40, but Virginia Union made three of four free-throw attempts while LU's possessions came up empty in the waning moments.
