Kakulu, Smith rise to moment on Senior Night

Eugene Smith had a big night. He was one of three seniors honored before the game.

Box Score

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. (February 19, 2011) — Senior Night 2011 was filled with some great moments by the senior group of Eugene Smith (West Palm Beach, Fl/PennWood ), Zane Oxley (Philadelphia/Martin Luther King HIgh School) and Emanuel Kakalu.

Smith led the group with 10 points, six rebounds, a block and a steal as he had to contain the 6-foot-11 center Justin Ramsey for most of the night. Kakalu dropped in four points, a career-high seven assists, five rebounds, a block and a steal. Kakalu was active all night and played the entire game. Oxley also helped in the defense of Ramsey and contributed three rebounds.

The quality play the group provided could not overcome Virginia Union's seven 3-pointers as the Lions fell, 62-48, Saturday night at Manuel Rivero Hall.

In a matchup of the second and third leading scorers in the CIAA, Denzel Mooney (Baltimore, Md./Western School of Technology) and Braxton Byerson did not disappoint the crowd. Byerson had 20 points alone in the first half as the crowd tried very much to get in the head of the star for the Panthers. He finished the game with 25 points and six steals. Mooney continues to show why he is regarded as one of the top players not only in the CIAA but in the nation. He finished the game with 23 points and four rebounds, the 15th time he has scored at least 20 points in a game.

Sophomore Terron Jones (Bronx. NY/Fiorello H. LaGuardia HS) led Lincoln team with eight rebounds.

Ramsey finished the game with a double-double for the Panthers as he had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Also joining him in double figures was Juan Wilson with 10.

The Lions went through some cold stretches as they went against the CIAA top-ranked defense. They were forced into going 4 for 22 from the behind arc and 18 for 53 from the field which translated into only 34 and 18 percent respectively.

Virginia Union was not much better, just 7 of 22 from the perimeter, but they got out to a big lead early and whenever Lincoln threatened, they seemed to knock down a much-needed shot.

The Panthers went up, 20-9, midway through the first half and led, 32-25 at the midway point.

Up Next

Next up for the Lions is their home finale for the 2010-11 season as they take on the Trojans of Virginia State University. The game is scheduled for 7:30 on Monday February 21 at Manuel Rivero Hall. The annual PinkZone game, sponsored by the Women's Baseball Coaches' Association, proceeds will go toward breast cancer research and fundraise for the families impacted by the disease.
