Rams' size helps fight off LU comeback

Hector was instrumental in the comeback, which fell just short.

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. (January 17, 2011) —
It was a high-energy men's basketball game for Lincoln University who played Winston-Salem State University Monday night at Manuel Rivero Hall. The Lions aggressively nearly erased a double-digit deficit before the bigger and stronger Rams pulled away to a 74-58 victory.

LU (1-11, 0-5 CIAA) sophomore point guard Quinton Hector (Schertz, Texas/Samuel Clemens HS) beat his career-high, scoring 19 points, shattering his previous best of 14 points set earlier this year. By his side was junior Denzel Mooney (Baltimore, Md./Western School of Technology) with 21 total points, seven rebounds and five assists. Kamaal Mattavous (White Plains, NY/Woodlands) also contributed a booming eight rebounds.

Mooney, who was declared the CIAA Newcomer of the Week for the second week in a row and third time of the season, has now reached at least 20 points in the last seven games.

Ending the first half, Lincoln trailed, 34-24, but came out fighting cutting the deficit down to a mere one point within the first four minutes of the second period, bringing the score to 47-46 with 12:16 to go. However, that was the closest the Lions got to defeating the Rams, who never trailed.

The Rams (11-2, 5-1 CIAA), playing their first CIAA season since 2005-06, simply outlasted LU, shooting 52 percent in the final period. Despite another phenomenal effort by Mooney, he admitted that around the 13-minute mark, he began to cramp up. As he repeatedly clutched his calves, Lincoln's offense faltered shortly after getting back in the game, converting on just 37.5 percent of its shots. Hector reached the mark on efficient 7-of-15 shooting including three treys as he continues to emerge as a viable scoring option. He also had a game-high four steals.

WSSU was paced by reigning conference Player of the Week Shelton Carter, who finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds.
