Central State comes to Manuel Rivero in last tune-up

Zane Oxley has stepped of late to provide a scoring spark.
Today's game versus Central State University represents the final nonconference tune-up prior to conference play next month, and the Lions hope that a win today against a quality opponent can springboard them into the CIAA schedule.

Although this is the final game of the “first half” of the year because it is the last game of the fall semester with winter break rapidly approaching, the Lions (0-6) are only playing their seventh contest.

With nearly 75 percent of the schedule still remaining following today, the objective is to establish momentum heading into the holidays and conference play next month.

To do so, they will have to beat an Ohio-base Central State team that is rolling. The Marauders have won four of their last five including an 81-77 victory on Sunday over Edinboro University at the Indiana Tournament hosted by the Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

CSU is led by 6-foot-5 forward Gerald Campbell and 6-foot-1 guard Wesley Jones, both of whom are averaging 16 points per game (ppg) in a balanced attack. Five players have at least 19 assists and as a whole, the team is shooting 49 percent from the field and 43 percent from three.

Lincoln continues to be paced by Denzel Mooney (Baltimore, Md./Western School of Technology) and his 16.5 ppg. Finding a consistent second option has been the struggle. Senior forward Eugene Smith (West Palm Beach, Fl/PennWood ) averages seven points. Sophomore point guard Kwhaeem Smith showed promise with his ability to get to the basket and knock down shots in traffic in Saturday's 70-60 loss against Kutztown University. He also drained a big 3-pointer in the first half and finished with 5 points and two assists.

Freshman Kamaal Mattavous (White Plains, NY/Woodlands) also had his best game yet with 3-of-3 shooting for six points and had a big bucket late against the Golden Bears.

The Lions are off until Jan. 6 when the CIAA schedule tips off with Saint Augustine's College coming to Manuel Rivero Hall for a 7:30 p.m. game.
