LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. — The Lincoln University men's basketball team got that elusive second win of the season behind the efforts of Darren Clark (Boston, MA/Largo) (Boston, Mass./Largo, Md.) and Damian Hyman (Bronx, NY/Harry S. Truman) (Bronx, N.Y./Harry S. Truman) with a 82-73 win over Fayetteville State Saturday night at Manuel Rivero Hall.
Lincoln improves to 2-8 as Fayetteville State falls to 4-7.
Clark's 19 points and four assists paced Lincoln while Hyman emerged from his early-season funk with 14 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Eugene Smith (West Palm Beach, Fl/PennWood ) (West Palm Beach, Fla./Penn Wood) had a team-high eight rebounds.
Joining Clark and Hyman in double figures were Darrell Mosley (Chester, PA/Chester ) (Chester, Pa./Chester) with 14 points, Denzel Mooney (Baltimore, Md./Western School of Technology) (Baltimore, Md./Western School of Tech.) and Smith with 10.
For FSU, Michael Carpenter produced game highs in points (20) and rebounds (nine). Jamal Baxter's 17 points, while solid, were not enough.
Hyman drained a three with 8:30 remaining in the opening period enabling Lincoln to retake the lead 25-21. After a defensive stop, Hyman penetrated traffic and got the tough lay-in, regaining the confidence he had last year when he averaged 14 points per game. Entering, the senior averaged just five. Lincoln would not trail the remainder of the ball game.
Balanced scoring allowed Lincoln to assume control early, at one point leading 38-25 and going into the break up 40-33. Clark recorded 11 points in the first half. Mooney had nine points on 4-of-6 shooting, and Hyman had his five.
Unlike previous contests were first half dominance gave way to second-half shortcomings, Lincoln maintained control through the game's final 20 minutes to escape with a convincing win over a CIAA opponent.
FSU would get as close as two at 53-51 with 9:27 to go when Jason Thompson converted a lay-up and an an-one opportunity for a three-point play, but Clark hit two free throws on the ensuing possession.
LU plays Chowan University Monday at 7:30 p.m., also at Manuel Rivero Hall.
