LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA. (April 5, 2009) – The Lincoln University of Pennsylvania baseball team could overcome a pair of early deficits in dropping a pair of games to Shaw University, 14-7 Sunday afternoon. (GAME 1 BOXSCORE) (GAME 2 BOXSCORE)
In the opening game, Melvin Robinson (Bear, DE/William Penn) continued his torrid stretch at the plate by delivering three hits and driving home three runs. Robert Webster (Washington, DC/Bishop McNamara) had two hits and three runs batted in. Pitcher Peter S. Reyes (Bronx, NY/Environmental Studies) struck out six batters.
Robinson has at least one hit in seven of Lincoln's last eight games after singling in the second game. Robinson has eight multi-hit games this season. He leads Lincoln in batting average (.360), hits (27), doubles (five), triples (three), home runs (three) and runs batted in (21).
The Lions battled back valiantly from a 6-1 deficit to close to within, 6-4 and 8-6 entering the sixth inning before Shaw pulled away. Robinson's two-run triple fueled Lincoln's three-run third inning. Robinson and Webster each delivered RBI hits in the fifth inning.
The Lions had 10 hits in the second game highlighted by Omar Glinton (Nassau, Bahamas/St. Augustine's)'s three hits. Omar Ongay (Wilmington, DE/Glasgow) and Alexander Donald (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) had two hits each for Lincoln. Ongay finished with eight strikeouts and he picked off a pair of Shaw runners on first base. Robert Webster (Washington, DC/Bishop McNamara) made a highlight-reel sliding catch in rightfield to short circuit a Shaw rally. Aaron Thomas (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) had his first career triple and Joe Kruemmer (Middletown, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech) threw a runner out trying to steal third base.
Lincoln, which has no more away games remaining in 2009, will return to action Wednesday afternoon when it hosts West Chester University in a nine-inning contest beginning at 3:00 p.m.
