Lincoln University, PA-In preparation for their 2009-2010 season opening visit to Division I Coppin State University, the Lincoln University men's basketball team got a chance to get into the flow of things with the 7th annual Lincoln University Alumni Basketball Game. After some sloppy play from both sides, Lincoln defeated their brothers in hoop 107-49.
With the “Orange Crush” marching band playing some of their favorite tunes, the Lincoln community got a chance to see what this year's team had to offer as well as a glimpse of the school's past.
Senior Dante Blanton-Holcombe (Baltimore, MD/Dunbar) showed why head coach Garfield Yuille labeled him as the “Kobe Bryant of Division II.” After sitting out last season as a team manager, the 6-3 guard let loose and gave fans a preview of what to expect. He scored a game high 37 points with a handful coming on crowd pleasing dunks.
Fellow senior Ladaye Johnson (Wilmington, DE/Hodgson Vo-Tech) amazed with his lights out shooting with 26 points, four coming on shots from beyond the arc.
With the score 39-24 at the halfway point, the Lions turned up the heat, scoring 68 second half points compared to 25 from the alumni.
For the older Lincolnites, class of 2009 graduate Garrick Wooten (Baltimore, MD/Randallstown) led in scoring with 20 and hauled down 6 rebounds. Leon Howard from the class of 1994 and Clovis Gallon, proud 1999 alum both chipped in with 10 apiece.
Lincoln travels to Baltimore on November 13. They will look to pull off the upset going up against Coppin.
