FAYETTEVILLE, NC (January 3, 2009) – The Lincoln University of Pennsylvania men's basketball team dropped a 90-78 decision to Fayetteville State Saturday night at Capel Arena. (BOXSCORE).
Damian Hyman (Bronx, NY/Harry S. Truman) led three Lincoln players in double figures with 21 points and eight rebounds. Darren Clark (Boston, MA/Largo) added 15 points and Bryant Leach (Philadelphia, PA/John Bartram) contributed 12 for the Lions (2-7 overall). Eugene Smith (West Palm Beach, Fl/PennWood ) added nine points and eight rebounds. Denzel Mooney (Baltimore, Md./Western School of Technology) finished with eight points. He has made at least two 3-pointers in six straight games.
Fayetteville State (8-2) placed five players in double figures highlighted by Darshawn Johnson, who scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
In a game in which three Lincoln players fouled out, the Lions suffered through a difficult evening shooting the 3-pointer, finishing 5-for-32 (15.6 percent). Lincoln also missed several point blank shots in the second half. Of Lincoln's 26 second-half missed shots, nine were from within two feet of the basket and 15 were from beyond 3-point distance.
The Lions closed to within, 56-49, with 12minutes, 21 seconds remaining. Lincoln stole the inbounds pass, but it could not take advantage of the opportunity. That would be as close as Lincoln would get. The Lions held a pair of 3-point advantages early in the game. Lincoln's last lead of the game was, 32-31 following a Hyman 3-pointer with 6:10 remaining in the first half.
Clark finished with a team-high four steals for the Lions. Meanwhile, FSU was 32-for-43 from the foul line and it made 52 percent of its shots (13-for-25) in the second half. The Broncos won the rebounding battle, 47-38.
Lincoln returns to action Tuesday night when it hosts undefeated and sixth-ranked C.W. Post at 5:00 p.m. C.W. Post has won all seven of its games by double digits including a 93-63 victory over Goldey Beacom on Saturday afternoon. Fayetteville State visits Virginia Union Tuesday night for a 7:30 p.m. start.
