Lincoln University women's basketball player
Kwanza Murray (Summerville, S.C./Summerville (Lackawanna College)) has been named the 2019-20 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division II Player of the Year in an announcement by the ECAC communications office Tuesday morning.
Murray becomes just the second player to earn ECAC division II player of thew Year honors in back-to-back seasons, joining Janea Aiken of LIU-Post who accomplished the feat in 2009-10 and 2010-11.
This is the fourth post-season accolade for Murray following the conclusion of the 2019-20 season. Last week, Murray became the first Lincoln women's basketball player in the program's division II era history to earn All-Region honors. She also earned the 2020 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Player of the Year and All-CIAA honors after leading the Lions to their best record in program history at 23-6 and their first ever national ranking.
Murray scored a school record 512 points during the 19-20 season and led the CIAA in scoring, averaging 18.3 points per game. She also set the school's single season free throw percentage mark, shooting 82.5% for the season (second in the CIAA).
The Summerville, South Carolina native also led the CIAA in field goal percentage (43.6%) and ranked second in field goals made (170); third in three-point field goal percentage (35.0%) and three-point field goals made (63) along with ranking ninth in the conference in steals (52) and steals per game (1.86).
Murray earned CIAA Player of the Week honors three times during the regular season and also garnered USBWA National Player of the Week honors in November; ECAC Division II Player of the Month honors for December and BOXTOROW National Player of the Week in February.
In November, Murray set a Lincoln Division II era record in November, scoring 41 points in a win over then-ranked Shippensburg while also setting a school record shooting 80% from three-point range while tying a school record with eight three-point field goals.
Murray finished her career with 891 points in two seasons at Lincoln and over 1,500 for her collegiate career which included two years at Lackawanna College. She is the Lions all-time leader in free throw percentage (81.5%) and three-point field goal percentage (39.1%). Her 118 three-point field goals are tied for second on the Lions all-time list. In 49 games for the Lions, Murray averaged 18.2 points per game, the second highest average in program history.
