Lions End Season with a Loss to Falcons in Opening Game of CIAA Tournament

Box Score St. Augustine's University used a 17-3 run to erase a nine point Lincoln University lead and hand the Lions a 66-61 loss in the opening game of the 2020 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men's Basketball Championship Tournament Tuesday night at the Bojangles Coliseum in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The fourth seeded lions conclude their season with a 9-20 record.   St. Augustine's improves to 12-17
Deaquan Williams (Camden, N.J./Camden) recorded his 16th double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds while Bernard Lightsey (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) led all players with 17 points.  Zahrion Blue (Princeton, N.J./Princeton) added 14 points and eight rebounds.          

The Falcons came out strong, jumping out to an 8-0 lead before Bernard Lightsey (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter) put Lincoln on the board with a three-point basket. Jordan Camper's (Chester, Pa./Chester) jumper closed the gap to three points before the Falcons produced a 10-0 uprising to take a 20-7 lead with 11:14 in the half.   The Falcon lead oscillated between nine and 11 points over the next five minutes and we on top by 11, 27-16 when the Lions began to seriously chip away sat the lead.

Back-to-back three-point baskets by Markus Stevenson (Voorhees, N.j./Hillcrest Prep (Ariz.) (Angelina College)) and later a traditional three-point play from Blue highlighted a 7-1 run that pulled the Lions within three point 28-25.  The two teams scored one more field goal apiece in the final 3:25 with Saint Augustine's clinging to a 30-37 lead.

Lightsey opened the second half with a three-point basket to tie the game before the Falcons again went back up by six points 38-32.  Another Lightsey three point basket tied the game again at 44-44 six minutes later, triggering a 16-3 run to not only give the Lions their first lead of the game but increase that lead to ten points, 57-47 with 5:14 left.

Lincoln still led by nine, 58-49 at the 4:12 mark when the Falcons began their game ending rally, starting with six straight points to close the gap to three 58-55 with 3:15 left.  After a Williams free throw, the Falcons scored eight straight to retake the lead 63-59 with 55 seconds left and held on for the five point win.

Kaarant Clemons led the Falcons with 14 points while Jalen Gaddy added 12.  Miguel Brown led the team with six rebounds.

The two teams turned in nearly identical shooting percentage numbers with the Falcons holding a slight edge , 37.7% (23-61) to 36.7% (18-49).  Lincoln was better beyond the arc, making eight three point baskets to SAU's five.  The Lions also had two more free throws (17-15) and outrebounded the Falcons 39-37.  The Falcons took advantage of the Lions turnovers, scoring 15 points off 16 LU miscues while Lincoln scored ten off nine SAU turnovers.
