th career three-point field goal but it was not enough as the Shaw University women's basketball team pulled off the upset win, 61-53 at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium in Raleigh, North Carolina Thursday night.
The Lions fall to 13-3 overall while Shaw improves to 6-8. The game was designated as a non-conference game.
Spencer entered the game needing just three three-point baskets to become the third player in program history to make 100 three point baskets for her career. She started the second quarter by making two consecutive three pointers to give Lincoln a 16-7. Her third basket from behind the arc did not come until 4:41 left in the third quarter and later added a fourth three-ball with 41 seconds left, her 101
st of her career and moving her into second place all-time on the Lions three-point field goal list, passing
DeJuana Mosley (Chester, PA/Chester) who finished her career with 100.
Bryanna Brown (New York, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin (Nyack)) added 15 points to join Spencer as the only two Lions players in double figures. Brown and
DeAshia Young (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Public Safety Academy (Labette CC)) led the team with six rebounds apiece and Young dished out a game high five assists.
A sloppy first quarter saw the Lions make just four baskets and hold a slim 10-7 lead. Lincoln opened the second quarter with eight straight points to take a 18-7 lead before the Bears rallied. Shaw went on a 12-2 run to pull within one 20-19 with 3:40 left. A three-ball from Brown and a basket by
Kwanza Murray (Summerville, S.C./Summerville (Lackawanna College)) (her first points of the game), pushed the Lions lead back to six before the Bears scored the final six points sending the teams into the break tied at 25-25.
The two teams battled back and forth in the third quarter with three ties and three lead changes before the Bears opened up a five point in the final minute. Spencer's fourth three-ball and two free throws from
Shantel Cheeks (Washington D.C./Rock Creek Christian Academy (Harcum College)) tied the game again at 39-39 heading into the final quarter.
Shaw opened the quarter with a 7-2 run to again take a five point lead before the Lions again battled back to take a 47-46 lead on Brown's second free throw. Shaw ran off six straight points to go back up by five before a 6-2 run by the Lions courtesy of three-pointers from Murray and Brown cut the deficit to one 54-53 with 1:36 left. The Bears then scored the final seven points to pull off the upset win.
The Lions will conclude their three game road trip in North Carolina on Saturday when they face Saint Augustine's University in Raleigh. Tipoff is at 2 p.m.
