Lions Set for Road Contest against Hawks

Murfreesboro, N.C.  - The Lincoln University women's basketball looks to rebound back into the win column when they take on Chowan University on Wednesday.  With the Hawks set to move into the Conference Carolinas for 2019-20, Wednesday's game could be the Lions' last at the Helms Center.

The Series:
Wednesday's game will be the 20th meeting between Chowan and Lincoln.   The series dates back to the 2009-10 season.  Chowan leads the all-time series 14-5.  Lincoln defeated the Hawks 71-68 in their last meeting at the Helms Center.   Lincoln is 2-7 at the Helms Center.

About the Lions
Lincoln University enters Saturday's game with an 11-10 overall record and a 5-5 mark in CIAA games.  The Lions are also 2-1 in CIAA North division contests.  The team is 7-3 in their last ten contests and had won four in a row prior to their loss at Virginia Union.
 
Kwanza Murray (Summerville, S.C./Summerville (Lackawanna College)) has appeared in 11 games for the Lions and is averaging 17.7 points per game.  She is second on the team with 30 three-point field goals and is shooting 51.7% from beyond the arc and 47.9% from the field.   Murray is also averaging 6.8 rebounds per game and is shooting 71.1% from the free throw line.
 
DeAshia Young (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Public Safety Academy (Labette CC)) is averaging 13.9 points per game.  Young is shooting 42.2% from the field and is averaging 5.1 rebounds per game. She is also leads the team with 34 steals and 55 assists.
 
Kenzie Spencer (Richmond, Va./Henrico) is second on the team with 16 blocks while averaging 8.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.  Her 35 assists and 20 steals rank third on the team.  She has made 21 three-point field goals and is shooting 70.9% from the free throw line.
 
DeeDee Irwin (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) leads the team with 31 three-point field goals and is shooting 29.5%  from beyond the arc.  She is second on the team with 22 steals. Alisia Machado (Brooklyn, N.Y./Medgar Evars Prep (Grambling)) leads the team with 144 rebounds and a 7.7 rebounds per game average.  She also has 16 blocks on the season (second highest on team).
Lincoln leads the CIAA in blocked shots (80), free throws made (296), free throws attempted (472), total rebounds (301) and three-point FG made (134), attempted (446) and makes per game (6.4).
The Lions rank fourth in NCAA Division II in total rebounds and sixth in free throw attempts.
 
 
Last time Out
The Lincoln University women's basketball team had their four-game winning streak snapped, falling to Virginia Union University 76-40 Saturday afternoon at Barco-Stevens Hall in Richmond, Virginia.

Lincoln falls to 11-10 overall and 5-5 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) games.  The Panthers improve to 17-1 overall, 8-1 in league play.

Kwanza Murray (Summerville, S.C./Summerville (Lackawanna College)) led the Lions with 16 points.  Deja Reynolds (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter (Temple)) added nine points.  Alisia Machado (Brooklyn, N.Y./Medgar Evars Prep (Grambling))  grabbed 11 rebounds.  DeAshia young dished out four assists. 

Murray Earns Newcomer of the Week Honors
Kwanza Murray (Summerville, S.C./Summerville (Lackawanna College)) was named the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Basketball Newcomer of the Week for her performance during the Lions two games  during the week ending January 6, 2019

Murray scored a total of 43 points in the Lions' two games last week, leading the team to wins over Wilmington University and Shepherd University. She recorded her first double-double of the season vs. Shepherd with 26 points and ten rebounds.

Lions Notch 100
Against Wilmington University on New Year's Eve, the Lions scored 100 points for the first time in program history, defeating the Wildcats 100-65.   In recording a 100-point game, the team eclipses their previous high mark of 96 points, achieved twice, most recently against Wilmington in November 2015 and first reached against Christendom College during the 2000-01 season.
   
Scouting the Hawks

The Hawks are 11-8 overall and 7-3 in CIAA games.  Chowan is also 1-2 in CIAA North division games. The Hawks are 6-4 overall at home this season.

Danielle Weldon continues to pace the offense with 12.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.  Jada Lee and Mariah Coker chip in with 9.7 and 9.2 points per game respectively.
The Hawks sit at the top of the league averaging 17.2 offensive rebounds per game.
 
Last Time Out for Chowan
The Chowan Women's Basketball team had a 15 point lead at the half slip away as Bowie State held the Hawks to 11 points in the second half to hand the Hawks a 47-45 loss in CIAA Northern Division play last Saturday afternoon.
Mariah Coker led the Hawks with 12 points.  Danielle Weldon missed out on a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.  Jada Lee chipped in with eight points and five assists.
The Bowie State defense held the Hawks to 18.2% shooting in the second half for a total of 11 points.
