Walkoff Single by Trojans Completes Season-ending Doubleheader Sweep of Lions

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
The Lincoln University baseball team's season came to an end Sunday afternoon as Virginia State's Cecil Henderson delivered a two-out walkoff single to lift the Trojans to a 13-12 win and complete the four game sweep of the Lions.

The Trojans also won the opener on Sunday 18-3.  The Lions finish the season with a 0-25 record.  Virginia State improves to 25-14-1.

Willie Hines (Bowie, Md./Bowie HS) took the loss in game two pitching the final 1.1 innnigs while allowing two runs on three hits.  Jose Medina pitched the final two innings to earn the win for VSU.

Five different Lincoln players had two hits apiece.  Hines had two doubles while Kashif Hill (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker Academy), Bradley Regalado (Queens, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin Memorial HS) and Pedro Martinez (Patillas, Puerto Rico/Puerto Rico Baseball HS Academy) also hit doubles.  Trevon Sutton (Chicago, Ill./Harlan Community Academy HS) and Luis Nieves (Staten Island, N.Y./LaSalle Academy) drove in two runs apiece.

Hines led off the game with a double and scored the Lions first run on Dominic Rheubottom (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytech HS)'s single.  Hill then singled to score Rheubottom and the Lions went on to score four more runs to take a 6-0 lead.  Nieves drove in two of them with a single and the Lions also took advantage of two errors by the Trojan defense.

Sutton's sacrifice fly in the second inning scored Hill who hit a one-out double earlier in the inning, making the score 7-0.

The Trojans however came back quickly in the bottom of the second sending 11 men to the plate and stringing together five hits to tie the game at 7-7.  Aaron Harris, Sisqo Scott and Jahleel Sewer each drove in two runs in the inning.

RBI singles from Sutton and Martinez put the Lions back on top 9-7 in the fourth inning and a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Aiden Gomes made the score 10-7.

Harris drove in two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull the Trojans within two 10-9.  Two innings later VSU took their first lead of the game with an RBI double from Harris and a RBI single from Julian White.

The Lions however did not fold and produced two runs in the seventh to take a 12-11 lead.  Carvonte Williams was hit by a pitch and then scored on Hines' second double of the game.  Hines stole third and scored the then go-ahead run on an infield error.

Hines however ran into trouble in the bottom  of the seventh.  Scott walked with two-outs and the bases empty, stole second and scored the tying run on Justin Nase's double.  Henderson then delivered the game winning hit to score Nase.

In the opener, Lions pitcher Marcos Castillo (Brooklyn, N.Y./HS of Telecommunications) hit his first collegiate home run but that was the Lincoln's only offense until their final at-bat as the Lions fell 18-3.

Gomes had two of the Lions eight hits while Hine's and Rheubottom each drove in a run in Lincoln's final at-bat.  Castillo took the loss, pitching 4.2 innings.

White again proved to be a Lion killer, driving in five runs, after producing a six RBI game yesterday against the Lions.  Sewer drove in three.  Jarren Norman earned the win for the Trojans.

VSU scored once in the first, six times in the third and twice in the fourth to take a 9-0 lead before Castillo put the Lions on the board with a solo home run in the fifth.  Castillo's home run was only the fourth hit by the Lions at the time.

The Trojans chased Castillo in the fifth inning, scoring five more runs to take a 14-1 lead.  Gomes took over for Castillo and got the final out in the fifth before giving up four runs in the sixth as the Trojans took a commanding 18-1 lead.

Gomes singled to leadoff the seventh and came around to score on Hines' bases loaded single with nobody out.  With the bases still loaded Rheubottom grounded into a fielder's choice to Grant Lindsey (Lynwood, Ill./Thornton Fractional School (Prairie State College)) who had singled pinch-hitting for Jordan Whisler (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara Area HS).  Hill and Williams followed with groundouts to the pitcher to end the game.
