Â
Trenton Lee (2-1) picked up the win for the Hawks after relieving Daniel Whitener in the seventh inning with two out and a tie game at 10-10.
Â
Lincoln scored twice in the first on
Trevon Sutton (Chicago, Ill./Harlan Community Academy HS)'s one-out two-run single in the first and exploded for eight runs in the second inning, the highest total by a Lions team since they scored nine vs. St. Paul's College in April 2010. The Lions loaded the bases with nobody out when
Kashif Hill (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker Academy) reached on fielders choice to bring in the first run. Sutton added his third RBI of the game after reaching on an infield error and Martinez delivered an RBI single to make the score 6-0 and still nobody out, prompting a pitching change by the Hawks. Â
Â
Following the pitching change, walks to Gomes and
Jordan Rorer (Cheltenham, Pa./Cheltenham HS) brought home another run and loaded the basses for
Willie Hines (Bowie, Md./Bowie HS) who delivered with an infield single to make the score 8-0. Rheubottom brought home the final two runs of the inning with a single of the middle to give the Lions a 10-0 lead.
Â
Chowan started chipping away at the Lions' lead with three runs in the bottom of the second and added five runs in the third, all with two outs to get back in the game. Markotay's bases-loaded double brought home three runs and was the only hit by the Hawks in the inning.
Â
In the bottom of the fourth, Chowan made it a one run game, taking advantage of an error by Hill in centerfield and a sacrifice fly by Trent Brosdahl off Castillo tied the game at 10-10.
Â
The Lions loaded the bases in their final at bat with singles from Rheubottom and Hill followed by Sutton getting hit by a pitch with two out but was unable to push across the go ahead run.
Â
Anthony Jefferson drew a one-out full-count walk in the bottom of the seventh, stole second and came around to score the game-winning run on a walkoff single by Markotay.
Â
In the nightcap, Chowan rallied twice from 2-0 and 5-4 deficits to take the second game 6-5.
Â
Jordan Whisler (Parkesburg, Pa./Octorara Area HS) started for Lincoln, pitching five innings and allowing four runs on seven hits. Sutton (0-3) pitched the sixth inning and allowed the Hawks final two runs, earning the loss.
Â
Hines went 2-for-3 while
Terrence Chambers (Cleveland, OH/Twinsburg HS) and Hill each had an RBI for Lions.
Â
Eight different players recorded at least one hit for the Hawks who banged out a total of 11 in the game. Vinny Puma earned the win in relief, pitching the final 2.2 innings, striking out six and not allowing a hit.
Â
The Lions struck first again, scoring twice in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Rorer drew a one-out walk to start the inning and Hines followed with a double. Chambers then grounded out to third, as Hines moved to third and Rorer scored. Himes then scored on a passed ball.
Â
Chowan scored four times in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead on RBI singles from Corey Bolam, Nicolas Lees and Anthony Jefferson and a sacrifice fly from Markotay.
Â
The Lions roared right back with three run in the top half of the fifth, loading the bases with nobody out and scoring all three runs via errors to take a 5-4 lead. Singles by Rorer and Chambers with Hines getting hit by a pitch in between loaded the bases. Hill earned an RBI on an infield fielding error which allowed the tying run (Hines) to score. Chambers scored four batters later when Gomes reached on an error.
Â
Whisler held Chowan scoreless in the bottom of the fifth, giving up two hits and stranding two runners in scoring position before giving way to Sutton for the sixth inning. Two one-out singles and a stolen base put two Hawk runners in scoring position for Marquise Lanier who singled to bring home both runners and give Chowan a 6-5 lead.Â
Â
Lincoln put the tying run on base in their final at-bat but was unable to score as Puma recorded two strikeouts in the inning to earn the win for the Hawks.
