Lions Look to Bounce Back as They Host Winston-Salem State on Saturday

Lincoln University, Pa. - The Lincoln University women's basketball team will play the second game of their four game homestand when they host Winston-Salem State University in a CIAA divisional crossover game on Saturday, December 15, 2018.  The Lions are looking to bounce back into the win column after Thursday night's loss to Johnson C. Smith.

 The Series:
The series between Winston-Salem State and Lincoln dates back to the 2010-11 season.  This will be the tenth meeting between the two teams with the Rams holding a 6-3 lead in the series.  Lincoln won last year's contest, 75-67 at WSSU and has won three of the last four meetings after the Rams won the first five games of the series.  The Lions are 1-3 at home against Winston-Salem State
 
 
 About the Lions:
Lincoln University enters Tuesday's game with a 4-6  record dropping their CIAA opener to Johnson C. Smith 78-73 in overtime.  Lincoln is 1-3 at home, 2-2 on the road and 0-1 at neutral sites.
 
Through ten games, DeAshia Young (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Public Safety Academy (Labette CC)) leads the team, averaging 15.2 points per game.  Young is shooting 49.1% from the field and is averaging six rebounds per game. She is also leads the team with 28 assists and 22 steals.
 
Kenzie Spencer (Richmond, Va./Henrico) leads the team with ten blocks while averaging 10.6 points per game.  Her 18 assists ranks second on the team and she is third on the squad with 13 steals.  Shakira Edwards (Newark, N.J./Bloomfield Tech) is second on the team in free throw percentage (76.9%) and is averaging 8.4 points per game.


Alicia Machado leads the team in rebounding, grabbing 67 in eight games played for an 8.4 average  She leads the team in field goal percentage, shooting 53.2%  and free throw percentage shooting  89.5% (17-19).. Jada Queen (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) is second on the team field goal % shooting 49.2% from the field; is averaging 7.4 rebounds per game and is second on the team with eight blocked shots

DeAshia Young (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Public Safety Academy (Labette CC)) exploded for a career-high 35 points as the Lincoln University women's basketball team dropped their Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association opener 78-73 in overtime to Johnson C. Smith University Thursday night at Manuel Rivero Hall.
 
Young connected on 14 of 22 shots from the field including two three point field goals and five free throws to eclipse her career high of 31 points set earlier this season with 35.  Young also grabbed 13 rebounds, dished out five assists and had five steals.   Alisia Machado joined her in double figures with 13 points.   Jada Queen (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) added 11 rebounds.
 
CIAA Honors for Reynolds, Edwards
Lincoln University women's basketball players Deja Reynolds (Philadelphia, Pa./Imhotep Charter (Temple))  and Shakira Edwards (Newark, N.J./Bloomfield Tech) earned Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Basketball weekly award honors for their performances during the week ending December 9, 2018. 
  
Edwards was named the CIAA Rookie of the Week while Reynolds was named the CIAA Newcomer of the Week.  This week's honors are the second for both players with Reynold's earning Newcomer of the Week honors back on November 21 and Edwards garnering Rookie of the Week honors a week earlier.
 
A noteworthy debut
In the Lions win over University of the District of Columbia on Nov. 14, Alisia Machado (Brooklyn, N.Y./Medgar Evars Prep (Grambling)) became just the third Lincoln women's basketball player in the program's NCAA Division II history to record 17 or more rebounds in a game, joining teammate Shahra Madison (Chesapeake, Va./Norfolk Collegiate School (Chesapeake College)) (19 last season vs. Bowie State (1/13)) and Michelle  Fitzgerald (17 last season at Bowie State (2/7))
 
Lincoln Earns Split in Tipoff Tournament
Lincoln opened their season with a 86-71 win over regionally ranked Kutztown University.  DeAshia Young (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Public Safety Academy (Labette CC)) exploded for 31 points in the win while grabbing nine rebounds.  Shakira Edwards (Newark, N.J./Bloomfield Tech) added 11 while Jada Queen (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) chipped in ten.
 
Edwards recorded her first collegiate double-double the next day as the Lions lost to Bloomsburg, 54-47.  The freshman guard had 12 points and ten rebounds.
 
 
Scouting the Rams
The Rams are currently 3-5 overall having won their last two games, beating Bluefield State and USC Aiken.   WSSU's conference opener against Virginia Union scheduled for last Thursday was postponed due to weather conditions.
 
Three players are averaging double figures scoring for the rams, led by Brionna Pate's 16.3 points per game.  She also leads the team averaging 9.5 rebounds per game and is tied for the team lead with 12 steals.
 
Amaya Tucker is averaging 15.1 points per game and also has 12 steals while Teara Johnson is averaging 13.4 points per game.  Jahlia Williams leads the team with 15 assists.
 
As a team the Rams are scoring 71.1 points per game while giving up an average of 74.8.  They are shooting 39.1% from the field, 29.4% from three point range and 60.4% from the free throw line.
 
Last Time Out for WSSU
Teara Johnson exploded for 33 points as the rams defeated USC Aiken 81-69 back on December 8, Amaya Tucker added 19 points while Laichelle Sparrow chipped in ten.

WSSU outscored USC Aiken 32-17 in the fourth quarter to pull away with the win.
