Falcons Edge Lions in Thriller at CIAA Tournament

Box Score CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Bojangles Coliseum) – Anthony Gaskins of the Saint Augustine's University men's basketball team scored a layup with 13 seconds left in the game that would give the Falcons a 61-60 victory over Lincoln University on Tuesday night in the first round of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men's Basketball Tournament at the Bojangles Coliseum.
 
With the win, SAU (13-15, 6-10 CIAA) will face Fayetteville State University on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 6:40 p.m. in the Bojangles Coliseum in the second round while the Lions conclude their 2016-17 season 7-20 overall and 5-11 in CIAA action.
 
Joshua Davis (Saginaw, MI/Louisburg Junior College) scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds for Lincoln while Malachi Seney (Philadelphia, Pa./Harford Community College) added 11 points.

Three players scored in double figures for the Falcons, led by Gaskins who ended the night with 18 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Quincy January chipped in 15 points and 11 rebounds while Kenneth Collins contributed 10 points in the win.
 
The contest featured 15 ties and 14 lead changes. Both teams shot over 40 percent from the field but combined for 26 turnovers.
 
The Falcons took an early 3-0 lead to open the contest with 19:39 on the clock but  Seney responded with a 3-pointer of his own to give the game its first tie of sixth in the first half. From there, SAU managed to get things going with its largest lead of the game (seven points) on a 9-2 margin before LU cut the deficit and eventually took the lead after scoring eight-straight points with 7:57 remaining.
 
The lead changed four times before D.J. Harrison made a layup to send both teams in the locker room tied at 26-26. Gaskins from SAU and LU's  Davis had 10 points apiece at the half as the Lions were responsible for 10-of-24 shooting (41.7 percent) compared the Falcons' 38. 5 percent (10-of-26).
 
The Lions offense got going in the second half, shooting 50 percent (10-of-20) from the field. Meanwhile, the Falcons also came alive and went on a 4-0 run capped by two free-throws from Jquwan Ruffin with 12:51 to go. From there, the lead changed seven times before Gaskins gave the contests its final tie with 1:27 remaining on a free-throw.
 
LU responded as Davis netted 1-of-2 free-throws to give the Lions a 60-59 advantage with 1:13 on the clock; however, two timeouts later, Gaskins split two defenders and scored the game-winning layup to secure the win for the Falcons.
 
For the game, SAU scored 17 points off of LU's miscues and outscored the Lions 30-20 in the paint.
