Box Score The Lincoln University women's basketball team won their second straight home contest defeating Cheyney University 74-66 in their annual "Battle of the First" game Thursday night at Manuel Rivero Hall.
The Lions even their record at 3-3 with the win while the Wolves fall to 1-5 on the season.
Teira Pendleton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytech) led all scorers with 18 points (6-11 FG, 6-8 FT) while
Michelle Fitzgerald (Baltimore, Md./Md. Academy of Tech & Health Science (N.C. A & T)) recorded her second consecutive double-double grabbing 10 rebounds while scoring 14 points, all in the second half. She also had a game-high six steals.
Shahra Madison (Chesapeke, Va./Norfolk Collegiate School (Chesapeke College)) added 13 points (6-10 FG) and six rebounds. Pendleton also had seven rebounds, three steals and three assists.  Â
Brianna Logan (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley (Siena)) added nine points and a game-high six assists. While
Shecquan Bailey (Salisbury, Md./Snow Hill (Baltimore City C.C.)) also scored nine points while dishing out four assists.
The Wolves placed four players in double figures, led by Yasmine Dorrielan's 18 points. Gianni Hill added 17 points while Jamyra Maye chipped in 13. Marlon Herring rounded out the double figure scorers for Cheyney with 11 points. Dorrielan led the team with eight rebounds.
The Lions led this one wire-to-wire but not without a couple of threats from the Wolves in the second quarter. Lincoln opened up a 23-15 lead on a jumper from
Lyric Artis (Selkirk, N.Y./Shaker (C.C. of Rhode Island)) at the 6:37 mark when the Wolves ran off seven straight points to close the gap to one 23-22 with 4:34 left in the period. Cheyney still trailed buy one and had a chance to take their first lead with just under three minutes left but the Lions put an end to the Cheyney rally with a 9=-0 flourish to close out the quarter and take a 34-24 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The ten point lead ballooned up to 16 in the third quarter as Fitzgerald scored nine of her 14 points in the period. The Wolves chipped away and cut the lead to 11 as the quarter ended, 55-44.Â
Lincoln opened the fourth quarter with an 8-3 flourish to boost their lead back up to 16, 63-47 with 5:46 left in the game and notched their biggest lead of the game at 71-54 with 1:45 left.   The Wolves however had one last run in them and brought the deficit down to single digits as time was running out, outscoring the Lions 12-3 over the final 1:29 to make the final score 74-66.
The Lions benefited from a solid all-around shooting effort, hitting 50.9% of their shots from the field (29-57) and making 14 of 23 shots from the free throw line. The Wolves meanwhile shot just 37.5% from the field (27-72) and made six of 13 from the free throw line. Lincoln outrebounded Cheyney 42-38.
The Lions take a break for final exams and will return to action on Thursday December 7, 2017 when they host Washington Adventist for a non-conference tilt. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
