Lions Struggle in Loss to Bears

Box Score Shaw University scored the first 12 points of the game as the Lincoln University men's basketball team was ice cold in the first half, before making a second half run that fell short in their 76-67 loss at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina Monday night.

The Lions fall to 3-11 overall and 2-3 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) games.  Shaw improves to 6-8 overall and 2-2 in league play.

Joshua Davis (Saginaw, MI/Louisburg Junior College) led the Lions with 15 points and five rebounds.  Cameron Campbell (Fayetteville, N.C./Trinity Christian Academy) and Malachi Seney (Philadelphia, Pa./Harford Community College) added 11 and 10 points respectively.  Umar Saaba (Philadelphia, Pa./Boys Latin HS) also had five rebounds for the Lions.

Benji Bell led the Bears with 34 points, six rebounds and four assists.

In the first half, the Lions shooting effort was as cold as the bus they traveled on last night, shooting 21.4% (6-28) and thanks to a 13-4 run to close out the period, reduced a 20-point deficit to 11, 34-23  at the break.  Two free throws apiece from James Richardson (Jersey City, N.J./Raritan Valley Community College) and Carlton Allen (Trenton, N.J./Manhattan College) started the run followed by a traditional three-point play from Blair Davis (Baltimore Md./Baltimore City College HS).   Three-balls from Tracey Nelson (Waldorf, Md./Maryland Eastern Shore) and Sean James (Newark, Del./Iona College) closed out the run.  Defensively the lions held the Bears without a field goal for the final 5:26 of the half.

The Lions shooting was much improved in the second half, as they made 14 of 26 shots for a 53.8% mark.  Lincoln opened the second half with a 5-2 run to shave the deficit to eight 36-28 just 1:16 into the period.  Shaw pushed the lead back up to 11 at 41-30 before the Lions again closed the gap, this time to five, 42-37 at the 13:03 mark.  Shaw's lead was at six when the Bears went on a 7-0 run to boost the lead to 13, their largest since the start of the period.  Again, the Lions roared back, with Campbell's 3-ball capping a 15-7 spurt and cutting the lead to five 70-65 with 37 seconds remaining.  This would be as close as the Lions would come as Shaw was a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line in the final 34 seconds, sealing the nine point win.

The Bears dominated on the glass with 36 rebounds to Lincoln's 24 and at the free throw line, making 30-43 (Lincoln shot 23-32).   Both teams had exactly 20 field goals.  The Lions recorded just eight turnovers; their fewest in a game this season; while the Bears committed 21, leading to a 15-7 advantage for Lincoln in the points off turnovers category.

The Lions return to action on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 when they play at St. Augustine's University.  Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
