Box Score The Lions lost a tough one tonight on Seniors Night. The evening began with excitement when the men took the court. The Lion faithful were treated to a double overtime thriller by the Lady Lions as they defeated the Vikings of Elizabeth City State. After the women's game the crowd was ready to see their men's team capitalize on the positive energy that was continued when the team held a ceremony to honor their seniors
Kelly Marsh (Smithfield, NC/Pitt Community College) and
Chris Burney (Philadephia, PA/Cheyney University) moments before tipoff.
The game was a defensive struggle and led to a number of lead changes throughout the first half. The largest lead either team held was eight points. The first half ended with the Vikings taking a lead of 32-29 into the second half. The second half was much like the first. Speed and execution was the way each team planned to win. Inside and out with shooters on each end was the setup. Unfortunately for the Lions, down the stretch the Vikings were able to connect on some timely three pointers and second chance baskets to take the lead and force the Lions to press. In the last few minutes their height advantage proved to be the difference as they were able to get some offensive rebounds for just a few more second chance baskets than the Lions.
The Lions were led in scoringby sophomore
Quaman Burton (Richmond, VA/John Marshall HS) who was able to use his quickness to get into the paint as he scored 26 points. He was joined by junior
Joshua Davis (Saginaw, MI/Louisburg Junior College) who came off the bench to put up 14 points to go along with eight rebounds. The Vikings charge was led by Decarlos Anderson who scored 18 and James Theus who also scored in double figures with 17.
The loss takes the team record to 8-16 overall and 6-7 in the conference. They are now in fifth place in the northern division with a record of 3-4. The next game for the Lions is against Virginia Union in Richmond, Virginia Saturday February 13, 2016. Game starts at 4: 00 pm.
