Lions Roared In Overtime

Blair Davis
Box Score The Lions of Lincoln roared loudly tonight after defeating the Hawks of Chowan University 77-71 in a thrilling overtime game. The Hawks came into the game with a 7-1 conference record and 14-4 overall. Their record however, did not deter the Lions as they came out of the Den ready to play. The Lionsshowed the Hawks they were ready to use their speed to defend which in turn fueled their offense. In the first half the Lions went up by 12 on quick inside play. That lead lasted until the final minutes when the Hawks went on a 16-4 run. The half ended with the Hawks leading 30-34.The Lion faithful knew they were in for an exciting finish.
Both teams played tough defense and made every shot tough. There were no easy baskets for either team as the scoreboard never showed more than a five point lead throughout the second half. A jumper by Quaman Burton (Richmond, VA/John Marshall HS) with seconds left in regulation time tied the game. With 4.5 seconds left the Hawks made an attempt to win the game but the jumper by guard Jeremy Smith who led all scorers on the night with 17 hit the rim and fell for the Lions.

The overtime didn't see a lot of scoring as the defense got tight on both ends of the floor. Junior forward Joshua Davis (Saginaw, MI/Louisburg Junior College) scored the first point hitting a free throw. Ironically he also scored the last points in overtime hitting free throws to seal the victory. The team was led in scoring by Joshua Davis (Saginaw, MI/Louisburg Junior College)' 16 points. He narrowly missed another double-double with 9 rebounds. His fellow Lions who also scored in double figures include: sophomore Jordan Watson (Philadelphia, PA/Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) with 12, sophomore Quaman Burton (Richmond, VA/John Marshall HS) with 10, freshmen Blair Davis (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore City College HS) with 10 and junior forward Vernon Young (Chicago, IL/University of St. Mary) who was a workman in the paint tonight with 12 points and 12 rebounds for the straight and box double-double. The win takes the team's record to 8-13 overall and 6-4 in the overall CIAA conference standings. The victory also gives them a 3-1 record in the northern division.

The next game up for the Lions is Saturday January 30, 2016 at Manuel Rivero Hall versus the Trojans of Virginia State University. Game time is 4:00 pm.
