Lions Ground Falcons in CIAA Action, 7-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CARY, NC – The Lions held St. Augustine's to a single hit in a 7-1 victory in the second game of a double header on Saturday, March 8th at the USA Baseball Complex. Freshman infielder DeVante Parker (Bear, DE/Appoquinimink HS) had three RBIs to lead Lincoln on three hits while scoring two runs.

In the fourth inning, DeVante Parker (Bear, DE/Appoquinimink HS) singled to right-center field for an RBI scoring junior outfielder Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS). Parker stole second base then proceeded to steal third and finally scored on an RBI single to left field by junior outfielder Martin Evans (Willingboro, N.J./Church Farm HS). The Lions scored two runs on two hits to take an early 2-0 lead over the Falcons.

The Falcons responded in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly-out and trailed Lincoln 2-1. In a close contest, the Lions exploded for five runs in the seventh inning to seal a 7-1 victory.

Sophomore designated-hitter Edwin Rivera (Bronx, N.Y./Gompers HS) led off the inning with a single to right field. St. Augustine's defense had two consecutive errors that loaded the bases full of Lion runners. Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) reached base on the second error that led to an Avery Lomax (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt HS) run from third base.

With runners on the corners for the Lions, Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) stole second base with DeVante Parker (Bear, DE/Appoquinimink HS) at the plate. Parker singled up the middle and brought home Smith and freshman infielder Brendan Sherman-Johnson (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) for a Lincoln 5-1 lead. The Lions put the game away with their second two-run RBI single of the inning this time by freshman infielder Ronald Lashley (Brooklyn, NY/Benjamin Banneker Academy). Lashley blasted a shot up the middle of the Falcons defense to score Martin Evans (Willingboro, N.J./Church Farm HS) and DeVante Parker (Bear, DE/Appoquinimink HS) for the final runs of the game.

Freshman pitcher William Hodges (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman HS) earned the win for the Lions striking out three batters and holding the Falcons to one run and a single hit.

Lincoln had a season-high seven RBIs led by DeVante Parker (Bear, DE/Appoquinimink HS)'s three and two by both Ronald Lashley (Brooklyn, NY/Benjamin Banneker Academy) and Martin Evans (Willingboro, N.J./Church Farm HS). DeVante Parker (Bear, DE/Appoquinimink HS) also stole two bases along with Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) while Ronald Lashley (Brooklyn, NY/Benjamin Banneker Academy) stole one base. The Lions improve to 1-6 overall and 1-1 in CIAA play after their first victory of the season over St. Augustine's.

In game one, St. Augustine's scored one run in the first inning, three in the third inning, one in the fourth inning, and six runs in the sixth inning to down the Lions 11-3. Pitcher Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) had a rough time allowing 12 hits and 10 earned runs. Smith struck-out two batters and the Lions offense scored all three of their runs in the seventh inning.

Senior infielder Steve Talmo (New Castle, Del./William Penn HS) hit a triple to left field to spark the Lions late in the game. Martin Evans (Willingboro, N.J./Church Farm HS) followed with a walk and then he advanced to second base with a steal. The Lions next batter, DeVante Parker (Bear, DE/Appoquinimink HS) also drew a walk to load the bases for William Hodges (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman HS). Hodges doubled to right-center field for a three RBIs, but the Lions loss the contest 11-3.
