Box Score 2 NEWBERRY, SC – The Lions combined for twelve hits against Newberry, but suffered two losses in a double header contest.
Edwin Rivera (Bronx, N.Y./Gompers HS) had four hits to lead Lincoln on March 1
st at the Smith Road Complex.
Lincoln led after the first inning behind four hits and an RBI single to left field by
Edwin Rivera (Bronx, N.Y./Gompers HS).
DeVante Parker (Bear, DE/Appoquinimink HS) led off with a single up the middle.
Devin Legins (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy) reached base on a bunt and
William Hodges (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman HS) followed with a single to right field advancing Legins to third base.
Devin Legins (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy) scored the game's first run off a single by Rivera giving the Lions the early 1-0 advantage.
Gabriel Santiago (Bronx, NY/Mount Saint Michael Academy) added a single through the right side, but the Lions were unable to capitalize and were held to only a single run.
In the fourth inning,
Edwin Rivera (Bronx, N.Y./Gompers HS) led off with a single up the middle while
Gabriel Santiago (Bronx, NY/Mount Saint Michael Academy) followed right behind with a single through the left side. Once again the Newberry defense held the Lions scoreless and held a 4-1 lead.
After Newberry exploded for five runs, on three hits, and one error in the fifth inning Lincoln faced a 9-1 deficit heading into the sixth.
William Hodges (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman HS) recorded his second hit of the day with a shot to left field. The Lions struggled against the Newberry defense and dropped the first game of the double header 9-1.
Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) pitched for the Lions and struck-out one batter while surrendering seven hits and eight earned runs.
Devin Legins (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy) relieved Smith during the fifth inning and allowed one hit.
In the later game of the double header, Lincoln found some much needed offense in the fourth inning against Newberry. After two quick outs,
William Hodges (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman HS) and
Edwin Rivera (Bronx, N.Y./Gompers HS) both singled in back-to-back plate appearances for the Lions. Hodges singled to center field while Rivera singled up the middle. Lincoln failed to convert those base hits into runs and were shutout 4-0.
Newberry scored two runs in the first inning and one run in each of the fourth and sixth innings. Terence Berry started at pitcher for the Lions and struck out four batters in six innings of work. The Lions defense allowed eight hits and played well with no errors against Newberry.
Lincoln falls to 0-6 overall and will open CIAA play against the Falcons of St. Augustine's in Raleigh, NC on Saturday, March 8
th at 1 p.m.
