Box Score 2 COLUMBIA, SC – Lincoln opened their 2014 season in Columbia, SC against Benedict College and loss both games. The Lions scored six runs on eight hits but a last inning run by Benedict downed Lincoln 7-6 in the earlier game of a double header.
Terence Berry led the Lions with three RBIs on two hits in the season opener.
Edwin Rivera (Bronx, N.Y./Gompers HS) and
Brendan Sherman-Johnson (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) also had two hits while
William Hodges (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman HS) and
Brandon Bolden (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro HS) had one each. Bolden also stole three bases while
DeVante Parker (Bear, DE/Appoquinimink HS) recorded one.
Lincoln scored runs in the first, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and eighth innings. Benedict had two runs in the second inning, three runs in the third inning, and single runs in the eighth and ninth innings.
At the top of the eighth inning, Terence Berry singled up the middle for an RBI to take a 6-5 lead.
Latuan Boggerty (Dover, DE/Polytech HS) scored for the Lions on Berry's single after a wild pitch advanced him to third base. The Tigers tied the contest at 6-6 in the bottom of the eighth on two hits.
In the ninth inning,
Brandon Bolden (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro HS) reached on a walk and then stole second base. Lincoln was unable to capitalize and the game remained tied at 6-6. Benedict took the lead in the bottom of the ninth on two hits, one run, and one error by the Lions defense.
William Hodge picked up the loss for the Lions surrendering one run, on two hits, and one walked batter.
Ronald Lashley (Brooklyn, NY/Benjamin Banneker Academy) pitched five innings and had one strikeout against the Tigers.
Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) began the game for the Lions and pitched three innings.
In the later game of the double header against the Tigers,
Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) homered to left center field in the third inning bringing in
DeVante Parker (Bear, DE/Appoquinimink HS) after he doubled to left field. Lincoln had two runs on two hits in that inning, but trailed Benedict 5-2.
Lincoln added two runs in the fifth inning but Benedict sealed the victory with 13 runs in the bottom of the fifth and went on to win 25-4.
Avery Lomax (Bowie, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt HS) led Lincoln with two hits while four others had one hit a piece.
Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) had two RBIs and William Hodge had the other one.
The Lions travel to Orangeburg, SC on Thursday, February 27
th to battle Claflin at 2p.m.
