LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – The Lincoln University baseball team opened a three-game CIAA series against Saint Augustine's with a pair of losses, 18-5 and 6-5 in eight innings on Saturday afternoon at the Lincoln University Baseball Field.
In the opener, Saint Augustine's (24-15 overall, 11-2 CIAA) scored seven runs in the first two innings and cruised to an 18-5 win.
Steve Talmo (New Castle, Del./William Penn HS) paced the Lincoln offense by going 3-for-3 with a run scored.
Richard Holguin (Bronx, N.Y./Fannie Lou Hamer HS),
Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS),
Alejandro Jones (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) and
Dan Spikes (Fort Washington, Md./Riverdale Baptist HS) each collected a hit for the Lions (4-20, 2-12).
Brandon Bolden (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro HS) (1-4) took the loss in four innings of work as he walked three and fanned three.
Devin Legins (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy) pitched three innings in relief.
Claren Ganus (5-2) earned the win with four strong innings on the mound as he surrendered two runs on five hits. Chris Rogers pitched the final three innings for the Falcons.
In the second game, Lincoln fell behind 4-0 after an inning, but battled back and used a four-run fourth to tie the game at 5.
In the bottom of the fourth,
Maurice Brown (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg HS) and Talmo had back-to-back singles to begin the frame. With one down, Spikes singled to plate Brown and Talmo.
Martin Evans (Willingboro, N.J./Church Farm HS) doubled to move Spikes to third.
Richard Holguin (Bronx, N.Y./Fannie Lou Hamer HS) popped a sacrifice fly to center to score Spikes as Evans moved to third.
Ivan Mitchell (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy) followed with a double to center, plating Evans and tying the game at 5.
The Falcons got a run in the top of the eighth in edging the Lions.
Brown, Talmo and Evans each had two hits, while Holguin, Mitchell,
David Christian (Inglewood, Calif./Alta Loma HS),
Christian Valdez (Hyattsville, Md./Bladensburg HS) and Spikes finished with one.
Smith (2-5) took the loss in eight innings of work. He surrendered six runs (four earned) on nine hits with five strikeouts and four walks.
Steve Hamilton (3-3) earned the win in seven innings as he gave up five runs on 11 hits and fanned seven. Pat Hall picked up his second save of the season.
The Lions close out the three-game CIAA series 1 p.m., Sunday, April 7 at the Lincoln University Baseball Field against Saint Augustine's.
