Lions suffer doubleheader setback against Rams

Lincoln dropped a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday at Philadelphia University
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA – The Lincoln University baseball team suffered a doubleheader setback to Philadelphia University on Thursday afternoon as the Lions lost, 6-2, and 11-3 (game called after fifth due to darkness) at Alumni Field.

In the opener, Lincoln (0-13) fell behind 1-0 after the first inning, but battled back and tied the game as Richard Holguin (Bronx, N.Y./Fannie Lou Hamer HS), who went 2-for-3, doubled and scored when Alejandro Jones (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS), who was 1-for-3, tripled.

The Rams broke the 1-1 tie in the fourth with four runs to grab a 5-1 advantage and added another run in the sixth for a 6-1 lead.

Lincoln tried to rally in the seventh as Holguin led off the frame with his first triple of the season and scored when Maurice Brown (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg HS) grounded out to the shortstop. That was as close as the Lions would get in the opener.

Phillip Tomsic (Bangor, Mich./Bangor HS) (0-1) took the loss as he gave up five runs (two earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and a pair of walks in four innings. Devin Legins (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy) worked two innings in relief.

Desmond Drummond (1-0) pitched a complete-game, four-hitter. He struck out a pair and walked two in the win.

In the nightcap, Philadelphia led 3-0 after two innings, but Lincoln battled back and tied the game at three in the third inning.

Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) opened the frame with a base on balls and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jones. Martin Evans (Willingboro, N.J./Church Farm HS), who went 1-for-1, moved Smith to third with a single to left. With two down, Legins, who was 1-for-3, singled to right to plate Smith and Evans. Legins came in to score on Edwin Rivera (Bronx, N.Y./Gompers HS)'s single through the right side, tying the game at 3.

However, the Rams (6-13-1) exploded in the bottom half of the inning for eight runs on seven hits and took advantage of a pair of errors to take an 11-3 lead.

Demetrius Robinson (Philadelphia, Pa./Murrell Dobbins HS) (0-1) started for the Lions and worked 2.1 innings. He gave up eight runs (four earned) on five hits with a pair of walks. Dan Spikes (Fort Washington, Md./Riverdale Baptist HS) came on in relief and worked 2.2 innings.

Rob Spragis earned the win in three innings of work. He surrendered three runs on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Lou Karcanes (1-0), Sawyer Brown and Michael Ross pitched in relief.
