Box Score LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, PA – The Lincoln University men's basketball team used a pair of quick scoring bursts to begin each half as a springboard to claim a 79-68 victory over Cheyney University in the "Battle of the Firsts" at Manuel Rivero Hall Saturday night.
The Lions (5-1 overall) ended a perfect week against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opponents by defeating Cheyney (1-5) for the third consecutive year. Speaking of win streaks, the victory was the Lions fourth straight. The Lincoln University opened the week by beating Mansfield on Tuesday.
Four players reached double digits in points highlighted by
Justin Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS)'s 22 point performance. In finishing with a season-high point total, Jackson was 9-for-16 from the field. He has reached double figures in scoring four times this season for the Lions.
Also reaching double digits for the Lions were
Tony Efese (Spring Valley, NY/St. Joseph Regional HS) (13 points),
George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) (11) and
Kyle Aiken (Randolph, NJ/Randolph HS) (11). Lincoln made half of its 3-point field goal attempts (9-for-18). The biggest 3-point shot of the game occurred in the second half after Cheyney used an 11-0 run to cut a 20-point deficit to 60-52 with 6 minutes, 58 seconds remaining, following a pair of foul shots by DeShawn Curtis. Derrick Washington (Washington, DC/Coolidge SHS) immediately answered with a 3-pointer from the corner on the Lions' next possession to give them a lead that never dropped below double digits for the remainder of the game.
On the Lions' next possession,
Will Cole (Newark, NJ/Cesar Chavez HS) got an old-fashion three-point play that gave The Lincoln University a 66-52 edge with 6:04 remaining.
Cheyney was led by Curtis' 28 points and Calvin Brown, who scored 16 points, pulled down nine rebounds and blocked five shots. Jerrod Johnson contributed 12 points for the Wolves, who were playing their first game on Lincoln's campus since February of 1991.
The Lions scored 13 consecutive points to swoosh to a 15-4 lead less than six minutes into the game. The run was highlighted by a trio of 3-pointers from the Jackson brothers and another one from Aiken. George's 3-pointer gave The Lincoln University the lead for good, 5-4, with 16:50 remaining in the first half.
Although Cheyney was shaken by the Lions' opening salvo, it did recover to close its deficit to 21-20 with 7:01 left before halftime following a Curtis 3-pointer. Another
George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) 3-pointer ignited a final first half closing burst for The Lincoln University, who went into intermission with a 37-30 edge. Lincoln controlled the first 10 minutes of the second half to open its biggest advantage of the game, 60-41.
Lincoln's next game will be Tuesday night when it hosts Georgian Court starting at 7:00 p.m.
