Late run helps Chowan slip past Lincoln

Box Score MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Lincoln University women's basketball team led by as many as nine late in the game, but couldn't close out Chowan as the Lady Lions fell, 59-57, on Wednesday night in a CIAA Northern Division contest at the Helms Center.
 
Tahlar McIntosh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Alvernia HS) led the way offensively with 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting and 4-of-6 from the free-throw line. Courtney Lucas (Washington, DC/Friendship Collegiate Academy) and Courtney Smith (Milwaukee, WI/Nicolet HS) each had nine points as the Lady Lions were 20-of-59 shooting for 34 percent.
 
Lincoln (7-13 overall, 3-7 CIAA, 1-3 CIAA North) took a 9-7 advantage after a jumper by Krystal Fluellen (New York, N.Y./Richard Green HS) with 15:26 left in the first half, but Chowan answered with a 9-0 run, capped by a Karina Monroe free throw to give the Lady Hawks a 16-9 lead with 11 minutes remaining.
 
The Lady Lions closed the gap to 19-17 after a free throw by McIntosh with 7:07 remaining. The Lady Hawks (4-14, 4-6, 2-2) again extended the advantage to 23-17 with 5:46 left, but Lincoln ended the first half on a 10-4 run as the teams went into the break tied at 27.
 
Lisa Saunders (Hampton, VA/Hampton HS), who finished with eight points, gave Lincoln a 42-41 lead after a pair of free throws with 10:04 remaining. Chowan tied the game at 45 after a Talaya Lynch bucket with 7:14 left, but Lincoln answered with an 11-2 run, capped by a McIntosh 3-pointer with 3:09 remaining.
 
The Lady Hawks closed out the game on an 11-0 run to earn the win.
 
Lynch led the way for Chowan with 19 points and eight rebounds. Janelle Murphy finished with 14 points, including three 3-pointers and Karina Monroe had a game-high 14 boards as the Lady Hawks shot 30 percent (18-of-60) from the floor.
