Smith fans four as Lincoln falls to Virginia State

Box Score OXFORD, Pa. Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) fanned four through eight plus innings of work, but it wasn't enough as the Lincoln University baseball team fell to Virginia State, 5-1, on Wednesday afternoon in a CIAA contest at Oxford Area High School.
 
Smith pitched 8.1 innings in taking the loss as he gave up five runs (one earned) on nine hits with seven walks.
 
Lincoln (5-21 overall, 3-12 CIAA) fell behind early and tried to rally in the bottom of the eighth.
 
Martin Evans (Willingboro, N.J./Church Farm HS), who was 1-for-2, walked with one out in the frame and advanced to second on a passed ball. Demitrius Morris (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech), who went 1-for-3, singled and moved Evans to third. Evans came in to score on a double-steal attempt as Morris was out trying to take second.
 
Maso Cotton earned the complete-game victory as he gave up a run on four hits with 13 strikeouts and a pair of walks.
 
Also collecting hits for the Lions were Kevin Cicali (Absecon, N.J./Holy Spirit HS) (1-for-4) and Matthew Anderson (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) (1-for-3).
 
Lincoln opens up a three-game CIAA series with a 1 p.m., doubleheader against Winston-Salem State University on Saturday, April 14 at Oxford Area High School.
