Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) went 3-for-3 in the first game, but it wasn't enough as the Lincoln University baseball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader, 19-0, and 7-1, on Thursday afternoon against Chestnut Hill College at Oxford High School.
Smith had a pair of doubles and a single to pace the Lincoln offense in the Game 1 loss.
Carl Randall (Fort Washington, Md./Gwynn Park HS) (0-3) took the loss in surrendering 11 runs (four earned) on seven hits with five walks in five innings.
Alexander Donald (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) and
Brandon Dooley (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) pitched in relief.
Jim Goodwin (2-0) earned the win in five innings of work for the Griffins (14-10). He scattered five hits and fanned one. Jack McGinley and Travis Kakareko worked in relief.
Demetrius Morris added two hits, while
Richard Holguin (Bronx, N.Y./Fannie Lou Hamer HS),
Christian Valdez (Hyattsville, Md./Bladensburg HS) and
Dan Spikes (Fort Washington, Md./Riverdale Baptist HS) each had one.
In the second game, the young Lions struggled defensively, which allowed Chestnut Hill to grab a 7-0 lead.
However, Lincoln (3-13) tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning.
David Christian (Inglewood, Calif./Alta Loma HS) led off the frame with a base hit up the middle.
Ivan Mitchell (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy) pinch ran for Christian and advanced to second on a balk.
Kyle Brooks (Baltimore, Md./Seton Hill HS) walked and with one down, both runners moved up a base on a throwing error by the pitcher. With two outs, Mitchell scored on a balk, but
Brandon Bolden (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro HS) struck out to end the game.
Matthew Anderson (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) (2-3) took the loss in pitching a complete game. He gave up seven runs (one earned) on nine hits with three strikeouts.
Seamus Finnegan (2-1) picked up the win in two innings of work for Chestnut Hill.
Beside the base hit by Christian, Morris and Cicali also reached on hits.
Lincoln returns to CIAA action with a three-game series in Murfreesboro, N.C., against Chowan University. The Lions take on the Hawks in a noon doubleheader on Saturday, March 31 and will conclude the series with a 1 p.m., single-game contest on Sunday, April 1.
