Lions drop doubleheader to Griffins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Lincoln University baseball team saw its two-game winning streak snapped on Thursday night as the Lions were swept in a doubleheader against Chestnut Hill College, 6-5, and 11-3, at Latsahaw-McCarthy Field.
 
In the opener, Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) pitched 5.1 innings in taking the loss for the Lions (3-7). He gave up six runs (three earned) on 10 hits with a walk and a strikeout. Demetrius Morris worked 0.2 of an inning in relief.
 
The Griffins (12-8) plated three runs in the bottom of the first, but Lincoln slowly chipped away at the deficit with a run in the second and a run in fourth.
 
Chestnut Hill added a run in the bottom half of the fourth to take a 4-2 advantage. However, Lincoln responded with a three-run sixth to grab a 5-4 lead.
 
With one down in the frame, Maurice Brown (Harrisburg, Pa./Harrisburg HS) walked and advanced to second when Matthew Anderson (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech), who went 2-for-3, singled to left. Brown and pinch-runner Brandon Bolden (Willingboro, N.J./Willingboro HS) took second and third on a passed ball. Kyle Brooks (Baltimore, Md./Seton Hill HS), who was 1-for-3, plated Brown for the first run of the inning. Ivan Mitchell (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill Academy), who went 1-for-3, followed with a single to center to score Bolden and Martin Evans (Willingboro, N.J./Church Farm HS), who went 3-for-3, tripled to center to plate Mitchell, giving the Lions a 5-4 lead.
 
Back came the Griffins in the bottom of the frame with two runs on one hit and took advantage of an error to grab a 6-5 lead.
 
Dane Gahr started for Chestnut Hill on the mound. He gave up five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and a walk in a no decision. Taylor Steen earned the win in pitching 1.1 innings of relief.
 
In the nightcap, Chestnut Hill scored a run in the first, exploded for eight in the second and a run in the third to take a 10-0 lead into the third.
 
Lincoln plated a run in the fifth, but surrendered a run in the bottom of the frame. The Lions tried to rally in the seventh, but could only score a pair of runs in falling to the Griffins, 11-3.
 
Carl Randall (Fort Washington, Md./Gwynn Park HS) took the loss in pitching 1.2 innings. He surrendered nine runs (five earned) on five hits with three walks. Bolden worked 4.1 innings in relief.
 
Anthony McQuade earned the win in pitching three innings. Jack McGinley, Travis Kakareko and Vinny Manzella worked in relief.
 
Lincoln steps back into CIAA Northern Division action 1 p.m., Saturday, March 24 as the Lions take on Virginia State in a doubleheader at Oxford Area High School.
