DOVER, Del. – The Lincoln University baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Delaware State, 22-1, and 20-2, to begin the 2012 season on Tuesday afternoon at Soldier Field.
In the opener,
Stephen Smith (Los Angeles, Calif./Dorsey HS) (1-for-3),
Kevin Cicali (Absecon, N.J./Holy Spirit HS) (1-for-2) and
Christian Valdez (Hyattsville, Md./Bladensburg HS) (1-for-3) each collected a hit for the Lions (0-2).
Lincoln fell behind, 4-0, after the first inning, but picked up a run in the top of the third.
Kyle Brooks (Baltimore, Md./Seton Hill HS) walked to begin the frame and advanced to second when
Brandon Dooley (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) grounded out to the third baseman. Smith reached on fielding error, which moved Brooks to third. Brooks scored when Demetrius Morris flied out to right.
The Hornets, who had 12 hits, exploded for 13 runs in the bottom of the third and scored five more in the fifth to get the win.
Richard Holguin (Bronx, N.Y./Fannie Lou Hamer HS) (0-1) took the loss in pitching two innings. He surrendered eight runs (six earned) on seven hits with three walks.
Dan Spikes (Fort Washington, Md./Riverdale Baptist HS) and
Carl Randall (Fort Washington, Md./Gwynn Park HS) pitched in relief.
Zach Adkins (1-0) took the win in working five innings. He gave up a run (unearned) on two hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Derek Marshalsea pitched two innings in relief.
In the second game, the Lions raced out to a 1-0 lead as
Martin Evans (Willingboro, N.J./Church Farm HS) started things off with an infield single and took second when Morris grounded out to the pitcher. Cicali and Brooks had back-to-back singles to plate Evans.
However, Delaware State (5-4) scored seven runs in the second and three in the third to take a 10-1 advantage into the fourth.
Lincoln cut the margin to 10-2 with a run in the top of the fourth as Spikes reached on a throwing error with two outs. Evans reached on a fielding error and Morris singled to right to plate Spikes.
The Hornets proved to be too much by scoring four runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Brooks paced the offense by going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Evans, Morris, Cicali and
Steve Talmo (New Castle, Del./William Penn HS) each collected one hit.
Matthew Anderson (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) (0-1) took the loss in pitching two innings. He surrendered nine runs (three earned) on eight hits with a pair of walks and one strikeout. Smith worked four innings in relief.
Josh Patman earned the win by pitching three innings. He gave up a run on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
The Lions open CIAA action with a 1 p.m., doubleheader in Raleigh, N.C., against Shaw University on Saturday, March 3.
