RALEIGH, N.C. – The Lincoln University men's basketball team got 26 points by
Denzel Mooney (Baltimore, Md./Western School of Technology), but it wasn't enough as the Lions fell to Shaw, 67-55, on Thursday night in a CIAA contest at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
Mooney, who was 8-of-18 from the field, sank four 3-pointers to finish with a game-high 26 points.
Derrick Washington (Washington, DC/Coolidge SHS) added 11 points as the Lions (7-10 overall, 2-4 CIAA) shot 36 percent (19-of-53) from the floor.
The Bears (14-2, 6-0) opened the game on an 8-0 run, but the Lions continued to battle back throughout the first half and cut the deficit to 24-21 after a
Kenny Sharpe (Chester, Pa./Elite Academy) layup with 3:27 remaining. However, Shaw closed out the first half on 12-7 run to take a 36-28 advantage into the break.
In the second half, Shaw pushed the lead to as many as 10 points, but each time Lincoln rallied and cut the margin to 57-52 after a pair of free throws by Mooney with 4:58 remaining. But the Bears closed out the game with a 10-3 run to get the win.
Malik Alvin led Shaw with 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting, while Junius Chaney finished with 15 points, including going 11-of-11 from the free-throw line as the Bears were 22-of-44 shooting for 50 percent.
Lincoln opens CIAA Northern Division play 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 21 at the RL Vaughan Center in Elizabeth City, N.C., against Elizabeth City State University. Catch all the action through live stats at:
