PETERSBURG, Va. (March 18, 2011) —
The Lincoln University baseball team successfully avoided surrendering the big inning, but the bats went cold against the shut-down pitching of Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) foe Virginia State.

LU mustered just eight hits and two runs spread over two games against Virginia State University Friday afternoon at Whaley Colbert Field. The Lions (2-12, 2-12 CIAA) dropped both games to the Trojans, 7-1 and 4-1.

In the first game, Percy Bullock (Pittsburgh, PA/Susquehanna) showed signs of busting out of an early season slump by going 2-for-3 at the plate. He also scored Lincoln's run in the first game, as freshman shortstop Demitrius Morris (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) drove him in with a double, LU's only extra-base hit of the game, in the fifth inning to bring Lincoln within 3-1. Virginia State scored three in the bottom of the frame to take control.

Phil Tomsic took the loss, allowing seven runs, but just four were earned. His record dips to 1-3.

When the Lions were on the basepaths, they were aggressive. Melvin Robinson (Bear, DE/William Penn) stole two bases while Alexander took one as well.

In the second game, Robinson was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double.

Virginia State (11-10, 4-3 CIAA) tallied two in the second inning, but Lincoln answered in the top of the third. Kyle Brooks (Baltimore, Md./Seton Hill HS) (0-3) walked with one out, and Steve Talmo (New Castle, Del./William Penn HS) singled. A throwing error by the Trojans' third baseman allowed Brooks to come around and score.

Brooks took the hard-luck loss, scattering six hits over six innings and allowing four runs. He didn't walk anybody and struck out five.

Up Next

Lincoln remains on the road Tuesday to face East Stroudsburg University at 3 p.m. It is the Lions' lone single nine-inning game of the year as all the rest are doubleheaders.
