BOWIE, Md. (February 6, 2011) — The Lady Lions' attempt to put together back-to-back wins for the first time this season was thwarted by Bowie State University on Sunday afternoon at A.C. Jordan Arena.
The Lincoln women's basketball team assembled a strong start, but Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association powerhouse Bowie State navigated the opening moments for a 60-50 win.
After missing several games due to illness, DeJuana Mosley (Chester, PA/Chester) led LU with 16 points, shooting at a 6-of-13 clip, a welcome sign. The senior combo guard is now inches within 25 points of 1,000 for her career.
Coming off the team's first conference win on Saturday against Saint Paul's College, the momentum stayed with orange and blue. With 13:19 remaining in the first period, Brittney Waters (Capitol Heights, Md./Charles H. Flowers)' trifecta attempt found mesh, putting LU (2-17, 1-11 CIAA, 1-5 North) ahead, 12-5.
That, though, would be the highlight of the night. Aided by seven free throws, efficient transition basketball allowed the Lady Bulldogs (12-7, 8-4 CIAA, 5-1 North) to take the lead, 21-19 on a Juliette Turner jumper with 6:04 remaining in the opening half. It was the first time they were ahead all evening, and they would not trail again..
While BSU proved opportunistic, the Lady Lions' hot start was negated by a cold stretch to close the first period, heading into the locker room down, 35-26. Lincoln just shot 26.3 percent. Not helping matters was Bowie State's size en route to out-rebounding Lincoln, 33-23 in the first half.
The Lady Lions did challenge in the second half. The biggest threat came on a 7-0 run spanning three minutes to get as close as 43-39 with 13:12 after Mfon Ekanem (Springdale, Md./C.H Flowers HS) connected on one of two free throws.
Struggles on the glass were corrected in the second half. Nine of Ekanem's career-high 15 rebounds came in the final 20 minutes, contributing to a dominating 32-18 edge on the glass in the period.
Again, shooting troubles proved the downfall. Playing its second game in a row and third in four days, Lincoln shot just 25 percent from the game.
Bowie State answered and grew the lead to double digits, which was where the game would end. Turner led the Lady Bulldogs with 16 points.
