LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – The Lincoln University women's basketball team shot a season-high 45 free throws and held off a second-half charge by Washington Adventist as the Lady Lions defeated the Lady Shock, 74-59, on Monday night at Manuel Rivero Hall.
“I am happy to get back into the win column,” Lincoln head coach
Jessica Kern said. “The girls needed this win before we left for Ohio. I'm rotating a lot of kids and still trying to find combos that work well. Our bench gave us a lot of production today with injuries to Mfon (Ekanem) and Tahlar (McIntosh). We still need to cut down on turnovers. I'm glad we are starting to change the culture in this program. This is good for my returners because they know that they can win.”
Three Lady Lions' players reached double figures in scoring, led by
Sharay DuBose (Salisbury, Md./Parkside HS) with 19 points, including going 11-of-12 from the charity stripe.
Krystal Fluellen (New York, N.Y./Richard Green HS) added a double-double, 12 points and 12 rebounds, while
Denyse Moore (Hampton, Va./Woodside HS) poured in 11 points as Lincoln shot 32 percent (23-of-72) from the floor and went 28-of-45 from the foul line.
Lincoln (4-4) controlled the game from the start by racing out to a 13-4 lead with 10:41 remaining after
Brittney Waters (Capitol Heights, Md./Charles H. Flowers) drained a jumper. Washington Adventist closed the gap to 18-13 after a free throw by Margo Douglas with 6:50 left, but the Lady Lions ended the first half on an 18-12 run to take a 36-25 lead into the break.
The Lady Lions took a 40-28 advantage after a free throw by Ekanem with 17:03 remaining, but the Lady Shock refused to go quietly and used an 18-9 run, capped by a Kristina Murphy layup with 8:50 left to cut the deficit to 49-46.
Lincoln responded and put the game away with a 12-2 run over the next four minutes.
Douglas and Vanessa Rice each had 13 points to pace the Lady Shock (3-2). Andrea Wilson scored 12 points as Washington Adventist was 24-of-66 from the floor for 36 percent.
The Lady Lions will take some time off because of Finals and will resume action 5:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 16 in Wilberforce, Ohio against Central State.
