TAKOMA PARK, Md. –
Denzel Mooney (Baltimore, Md./Western School of Technology) surpassed the 1,000-point plateau, but it wasn't enough as the Lincoln University men's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak snapped as Washington Adventist knocked off the Lions, 81-74, on Wednesday night at The Pitt.
Mooney, a senior from Baltimore, Md., entered Wednesday's game just nine points shy of reaching the mark and surpassed it by sinking a 3-pointer with 4:33 remaining in the contest.
Kenny Sharpe (Chester, Pa./Elite Academy) led the way for Lincoln (4-4) with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting. He also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Mooney chipped in with 17 points on 8-of-12 from the floor, while
George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) and
Justin Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) each had 10 points. The Lions, who led, 43-33, at the half, were 31-of-71 shooting (44 percent).
The Shock erased a 10-point halftime deficit by using a 20-8 run to tie the game at 55 with 8:42 remaining. Washington Adventist took the lead for good on a Brandon Washington layup with 6:19 left, which started a 13-6 run to extend the margin to 73-64 with 1:47 remaining.
Lincoln got as close as five points, 79-74, after a
Derrick Washington (Washington, DC/Coolidge SHS) bucket with eight seconds remaining.
Jamie Newton paced The Shock with 27 points, including going 12-of-14 from the foul line. Josh Adeyeye added 16 points. Brandon Washington and Marcus Coleman each recorded double-doubles as Washington finished with 15 points and 10 boards and Coleman had 14 points and 13 rebounds. Washington Adventist was 28-of-60 shooting for 47 percent.
Lincoln returns to the court 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 3 as the Lions take on Pfeiffer University at Manuel Rivero Hall.
