PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – It was a Jackson night for the Lincoln University men's basketball team as George and Justin combined to score 32 points scored as the Lions downed rival Cheyney, 65-56, on Friday night at the Liacouras Center.
“At this time, it feels so good just to get a win,” Lincoln head coach
John Hill said. “We played some very good basketball, but we haven't been able to close games. The focus was to close games and make the necessary plays to win. We are probably two or three plays away from being 3-1. We played some good PSAC schools and they play a good brand of basketball. This win is more about coming out with a win and not about the hype.”
Lincoln (1-3), which beat Cheyney for the first time since the 2006-07 season, shot 43 percent (22-of-53) from the floor.
George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) was nearly perfect from the floor, going 8-of-9 for a team-high 18 points. Meanwhile,
Justin Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS) added 14 points, including going 5-of-6 from the free-throw line to pace the Lincoln offense.
Richard Glover (Baltimore, Md./Havre De Grace HS) led the way on the glass with seven rebounds.
“In the first half, I took just one shot,”
George Jackson (Baltimore, MD/Digital Harbor HS), who scored a career-high 26 points on Wednesday against Millersville, said. “But going into the second half, I let the game come to me and I felt that I had the advantage over my man. I believe we are still making mistakes, but we are a few plays like coach said being 3-1. We still are making mistakes, but after getting this win, it will motivate us to get more and have a good season.”
The Lions, who led, 24-23, at the break, struggled to get things going early in the second half and with the game tied at 30 with 16:13 remaining, Lincoln used a 11-5 run, capped by a pair of free throws by
Denzel Mooney (Baltimore, Md./Western School of Technology) to give the Lions a 41-35 advantage with 11:04 left.
Lincoln pushed to the margin to as many as nine points before the Wolves (0-1) tried to rally in the final two minutes.
Buckets by Jerrod Johnson and Jason Saab cut the deficit to just four points, 60-56, with 44 seconds remaining, but the Lions closed the game on a 5-0 run to get the win.
Brandon Baylor kept Cheyney in the game late in the second half by going 16-of-21 from the foul line to pace the Wolves with 21 points. Sabb added 20 as Cheyney was 15-of-42 from the floor, but kept the game close by shooting 71 percent (24-of-34) from the free-throw line.
Lincoln returns to action 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 22 against Goldey-Beacom at Manuel Rivero Hall.
