LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. (January 20, 2011) – Lights-out shooting from Shaw quieted Lincoln's normally solid defense as the Bears prevailed 74-46 Thursday night at Manuel Rivero Hall.
Shaw shot 51 percent from the floor on 28-of-55 shooting and made 7-of-15 3-pointers. Attempting to combat that was Lincoln University's standout guard, junior Denzel Mooney (Baltimore, Md./Western School of Technology). After being silenced for two points in the first half, the Baltimore native erupted for 21 over the final period to give him 23 for the night and his eighth-straight contest with at least 20.
The game, which was the final crossover contest with the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association's (CIAA) southern division, began evenly enough, slowing to a defensive grind and a pace that favors Lincoln's style of play.
Single-handedly accounting for LU's offense in the opening period, Quinton Hector (Schertz, Texas/Samuel Clemens HS) continued where he left off. Tallying a career-high 19 points on Monday against Winston-Salem State, the sophomore guard sunk three treys in the opening four minutes to put the Lions up 17-16. He finished with 12 points, his third double-digit game this season.
However, over the game's next nine and half minutes, both teams combined for six points as the Bears staked to a 20-19 lead with 4:45 left in the first half.
The momentum decidedly swung with 3:26 to go in the opening period when Hector was fouled on a deep 3-point try and he missed his three foul shots. For the game, LU was 9-of-20 from the line. Shaw was not much better at 11-for-21.
The Bears took advantage of Hector's misses with a 10-2 run to close the first half up 31-21.
In the second half, Shaw continued where it left off, converting on 16-of-29 shot including three 3-pointers. Although Mooney scored 21 of his points in an attempt to match the Bears, the rest of the Lions accounted just four points.
Although Lincoln shot just 27.6 percent from the field for the game, it did take care of the basketball, turning it over just 16 times to Shaw's 20. LU turned those miscues into 17 points.
Shaw was led by Devon McLendon's 24 points. He added eight rebounds while Dwight Bell had a game-high 13 boards. Dominique Stewart (Islandia, NY/St. John the Baptist) and Hector each had five rebounds to lead the Lions.
