LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. (January 17, 2011) — Beginning a four-game homestand, the Lady Lions of Lincoln University displayed resiliency but fell hard in the closing minutes to the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State University, 73-55.
Facing a team that has been known to take advantage of every opportunity, small miscues proved too difficult to overcome down the stretch.
It must be noted that Winston-Salem State University moved up to the Division I level following the 2005-06 season but just moved back down to Division II and the CIAA.
For a while, it appeared that this game was destined to go the distance. Lincoln began the second half down 30-22, but WSSU quickly opened up a double-digit margin. Lincoln countered on a 7-1 run with layups by Mon Ekanem and Sharay DuBose (Salisbury, Md./Parkside HS) and a 3-pointer by sophomore Brittney Waters (Capitol Heights, Md./Charles H. Flowers), trimming the deficit to 31-26 with 16:20 to go. The Lady Rams, though, scored the game's next six points to bring the lead back up to 11 and cruise from there.
The Lady Lions were led by DuBose and her 16 points. She added seven rebounds, three steals and an assist. DeJuana Mosley (Chester, PA/Chester) in her usual sidekick role chipped in 10 points.
The Lady Lions' sparkplug Tahlar McIntosh (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Alvernia HS) continued her stat-filling games as she had seven points, nine rebounds (five on the offensive glass) and three assists.
LU limited its turnovers to 17, but 23 fouls which led to 32 free throw attempts for the Winston-Salem State. The Lady Rams went 7-for-13 from beyond deep and 22-for-32 from the charity stripe.
The Lady Lions went 5-for-16 from beyond deep and 12-for-25 from the line. If the Lady Lions reserve these stats or minimize turnovers, they can reserve snap the five-game skid.
The Lady Rams were led by Vontisha Woods with 24 points and eight rebounds.
